The last one. Both sides missed out on gimmes that could have won the war with minimal casualties. I attribute this to the arsenic and mercury based anti-biotics that were available at the time and the frequency of head injuries. The head injuries were the result of disease and the general absence of medical care in rural communities. That is why there is a laundry list of missed opportunities on both sides.
