Explain why coaches in an "amateur" sport like college football are paid $7 million a year

They get paid what the establishment thinks they're worth.
Obviously a university is not going to pay their football coach $7 million if the program is only bringing in $6 million.

What happened to the idea that college sports is an amateur sport.? You're not addressing the issue.

The players have always been considered to be amateur, but the programs are into making as much money as possible and have been that way for longer than all of us here have been alive.

Actually, the schools dont even pay these salaries anyway.

They pay a small portion of course, but private booster clubs pay the rest.

Nick Saban, for instance, will make $7M + a year at Alabama, the University only pays about $250K of that.

I on the other hand watch PRO BALL because it's the creme of the college crop....no bullshit....which is why the NFL stands for "not for long"...average career is 4 years. If you wonder why Hoke got $2.8M at Michigan, it's because the BIG HOUSE seats 110,000 fans and pays for all the other sports programs including intramural and womens.

That's not the issue!! It's supposed to be an amateur sport. That's why the players aren't paid. So why are the coaches.

Saying "it's always been like that" doesn't make it right.

They're paid that well because an elite coach is worth it.

To the school, and to the players.

How many guys had Saban made millionaires over the years?

How many millions has he brought into the school?

Is it right that Hillary Clinton peddles influence at $300,000 a pop for a speech?

It's called freedom.

Of course it's the issue....in order to put 110,000 asses in those seats Michigan has to have a winning program. That takes a coach who can recruit talent from all over the country....convince their parents the kid is in good hands and will get a good education. Then he has to mold high schoolers away from home for the first time, how to deal with college life, women, drugs, hustlers trying to get them to shave points.....all before their first practice. On the other side of the field is a guy just like him.....with HUGE responsibilities.....guys who can do all that and WIN are at a premium and are paid a premium price. Think!
