The New York attorney general has begun an investigation of Exxon Mobil to determine whether the company lied to the public about the risks of climate change or to investors about how such risks might hurt the oil business.

Global Warming

By Walter E. Williams

March 10, 2015

“But the debate is settled. Climate change is a fact,” said President Barack Obama in his 2014 State of the Union address. Saying the debate is settled is nonsense, but the president is right about climate change. GlobalChange.gov gives the definition of climate change: “Changes in average weather conditions that persist over multiple decades or longer. Climate change encompasses both increases and decreases in temperature, as well as shifts in precipitation, changing risk of certain types of severe weather events, and changes to other features of the climate system.” That definition covers all weather phenomena throughout all 4.54 billion years of Earth’s existence.

The Evil Scam Called 'Global Warming'

Fear is being used by the political class as an excuse to accumulate more power and self-importance — and collect a lot more taxes to support their agenda. Instead of being stampeded into the dark fantasy, we should focus on increasing our wealth and our knowledge. Eventually, mankind’s fate will depend on our technological advancement. Nature teaches us — not that many environmentalists listen — that we need to colonize the rest of the solar system, and beyond. Mankind must diversify, so all our eggs aren’t in one planetary basket.

Did ExxonMobil Lie About What It Knew About Climate Change?

The bottom line: Schneiderman's investigation is likened to the litigation against Big Tobacco that did lie about the health dangers of smoking for decades. The result of that litigation is annual payments to the states totaling $206 billion dollars over 25 years. There is little doubt that Schneiderman is looking for an even bigger pay day from Big Oil.

ExxonMobil researchers and executives were not alone in their uncertainty about the future trajectory of climate change. In 1992, the National Academy of Sciences issued a big report, Policy Implications of Greenhouse Warming: Mitigation, Adaptation and the Science Base, that, among other things, noted:

Increases in atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations probably will be followed by increases in average atmospheric temperature. We cannot predict how rapidly these changes will occur, how intense they will be for any given atmospheric concentration, or, in particular, what regional changes in temperature, precipitation, wind speed, and frost occurrence can be expected. So far, no large or rapid increases in the global average temperature have occurred, and there is no evidence yet of imminent rapid change. But if the higher GCM projections prove to be accurate, substantial responses would be needed, and the stresses on this planet and its inhabitants would be serious.

Over the decades, company executives did frequently point to uncertainties in the developing climate science. But this seems have changed after the IPCC issued its Fourth Assessment of climate science in 2006 which stated:

Most of the observed increase in global average temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations.

After that report, for the first time (that I could find at least), the company's 2006 annual report noted the risks of climate change to its business:

Political and Legal Factors: The operations and earnings of the Corporation and its affiliates throughout the world have been, and may in the future be, affected from time to time in varying degree by political and legal factors including ... laws and regulations related to environmental or energy security matters, including those addressing alternative energy sources and the risks of global climate change...

Is that enough to squelch Schneiderman's investigation? As the New York Times notes:

Whether Exxon Mobil began disclosing the business risks of climate change as soon as it understood them is likely to be a major focus of the New York case. The people with knowledge of the case said the attorney general’s investigators were poring through the company’s disclosure filings made since the 1970s, but were focusing in particular on recent statements to investors.

I Was On the Global Warming Gravy Train

The political realm in turn fed money back into the scientific community. By the late 1990s, lots of jobs depended on the idea that carbon emissions caused global warming. Many of them were bureaucratic, but there were a lot of science jobs created too.

I was on that gravy train, making a high wage in a science job that would not have existed if we didn't believe carbon emissions caused global warming. And so were lots of people around me; there were international conferences full of such people. We had political support, the ear of government, big budgets. We felt fairly important and useful (I did anyway). It was great. We were working to save the planet!

I think if I was the Ceo of that company or any company that is being sued by a state attourny General I would elect to do business outside of that state In Order to avoid being sued. What would New York be like without gas?

Exxon Mobile was a huge donor to the Clinton Crime Family Foundation. Exxon Mobil recently withdrew its support of the Foundation. Angered because of the withdrawal of funds and support for the Foundation, Hillary, under FBI investigation herself, called for an investigation into Exxon Mobil.

True.

NY State has a lot of armed gestapo agents ready to EXTORT 206 BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBILLION dollars from Exxon-Mobil. So they will conveniently assume that globull warming is a valid science.

Satellites deny global warming

Eighteen years, nine months.

As world leaders prepare to gather in Paris the first two weeks in December to negotiate a new global climate deal, the statistic – 18 years, nine months – is critical to keep in mind.

That’s the length of time since there has been any significant increase in global temperatures.

The members of the United Nations first signed a climate deal at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June of 1992. Since then, the sky-is-falling rhetoric has continued to grow in intensity. And governments around the world have spent hundreds of billions of dollars researching climate change and trying to stop it.

But since January of 1997, the world’s eight orbiting weather satellites have failed to detect any appreciable warming.

Under the Martin Act, the state must prove that a company deceived the public by misrepresenting or omitting a material fact in the offering of securities.

Lawyers say the act is unique in that no proof of intent to deceive is required to bring a claim, and prosecutors do not even need to show that anyone was in fact defrauded. The act allows for criminal as well as civil charges.

New York State's highest court ruled in 1926 that it covers "all deceitful practices contrary to the plain rules of common honesty." The act "is one of the broadest anti-fraud statutes ever devised, at least in a democratic society," wrote Eric Dinallo, a chief prosecutor under former Attorney General Spitzer, in the New York University Journal of Legislation and Public Policy.

It has been used to extract large monetary penalties from finical institutions, said Jim McGuire, a litigation partner at the Dechert law firm in New York. "The Martin Act is a nearly empty vessel into which the AG can pour virtually any content that he wants," McGuire said.

And of course , no judicial review.

Because the state's own courts will rule that extracting 206 BBBBBBillion from an oil company using junk science is a good thing.

Politburo chief Commissar Schneiderman intends to harrass New Yorkers who dare act like they are free people

Benjamin M. Wassell of Silver Creek, New York, a wounded Iraq war veteran, is the first resident of that state to be arrested and face prosecution under its draconian new firearms law. He was arrested during an undercover operation by state police in which he sold an AR-15 rifle and six large-capacity clips on January 24.

“By selling these illegal firearms, Mr. Wassell’s actions [sic] had potentially dangerous consequences for New Yorkers,” insisted Eric Schneiderman, procurator for the New York State Politburo. “We have seen far too much gun violence in our state in recent months, and the sale of illegal semiautomatic weapons will not go unpunished.”

Cutting himself in for a portion of what he mistakenly believes to be glory, Joseph D’Amico, Commissar of the New York State Police, gloated that “our partnership with the Attorney General’s office has resulted in taking a dangerous criminal off the streets.”

There has been no warming even though one-third of all anthropogenic forcings since 1750 have occurred since January 1997, during the pause in global warming.

The Pause draws blood - A new record Pause length: no warming for 18 years 7 months

LA Times refuses to show so-called smoking gun against Exxon - here it is

I believe you guys/gals are looking at this all wrong. Yes, I too believe what has happened is a joke, but it is time all of this be brought to the forefront; and here is all of the supposed FOSSIL FUEL corporations opportunity.

We have seen clearly with Trump, Carson, Cruz, and Fiorina; that the bullshit establishment view has been put under extreme pressure; pressure they do not like. The citizens are asking questions, which they do not want to answer.

Now we have a leftist who has brought a blinding light to this. We should all say that it is about time! We can now force a settlement, an absolute outcome by helping push the issue. Everyone should be behind this, to prove, or disprove the theories.

Look at it this way................they, and the media, have insisted FOREVER it is settled science. Well, now their supposed settled science gets scrutiny, and thank you very much. You as conservatives can NOT lose. If you are proven wrong, it was settled science. If they are proven wrong, their whole political idea falls apart. I think it is easily worth the risk.

EXACTLY

"When you read it – which you can do here – it soon becomes clear that the document undercuts the paper’s claims that ExxonMobil knew with certainty everything there is to know about global warming back in the 1980s yet failed to sound alarms.

By deliberately hiding this report from readers (while simultaneously citing it to make damaging claims about our corporation’s history of scientific research), the Los Angeles Times undermines the already low levels of trust in the media and in the media’s ability to cover issues of science and policy with accuracy and fairness."
