Emerson of ELP Dies

Oh what a LUCKY MAN he was...
Will you stop bringing that song up? It's one my least favorites of theirs. It goes right next to Pirates. You just like it, because you wanna bang Greg Lake.
I don't blame ya, I used to hate it too. Now? Totally different take on it. CarnEvil9 was my fave back in the day, all three parts.

my first one was Cream with Spirit opening in late 69 at the Anahiem CC.....one of the best live acts i ever saw was Thin Lizzy when they opened for Queen at the Forum in 76....those fuckers rocked the house down and got called back for an encore, was a fan after that....
I saw 2/3's of Cream. No Eric.

I hated Thin Lizzy. I also hated Queen. Didn't we already have this conversation?

But you have to admit, Greg Lake was yummy, back in the day?
I don't know about that, loved his Music. And the album art of the day, we need to create a thread of favorite retro album art. The ELP "Brain salad surgery" art, by the guy that did the concept for aliens, that was the BOMB.

When you start talking greatest ever (not most popular) it gets a little subjective when you are in the top ten or fifteen of most lists. I agree with you on Hendrix. An aficionado but his solos were not all that melodic, they were more racy. Buck Dharma of Blue Oyster Cult I much prefer. I, personally, think Deep Purple is just as great in some ways as Led Zeppelin. But here is where I meant it becomes a matter of taste when you are comparing elites. Too many great bands.
BTW, your response to Aaronland in post #15 was the best! :lmao:
Mark Farner hater.
That's quite, Ok. I was never big on sam kinnison, as it were.

I can understand where some longer lesser known songs on some Grand Funk albums can grind on you, but having said that, I think Mark Farner is fabulous. Like Ian Anderson, Felix Cavaliere, and many others, they wrote almost all the music, played a great instrument or two and were a very good lead vocalist.

You have a nice impressive history of great concerts, it must have been fun. I like many of those bands a lot, but I see three in my top 12 all time, moody blues, jethro tull and alice cooper. But special nods to Alvin lee TYA and sheena. :)

lots of people do that....i would have put wakeman at no.3 in the rock keyboard world.......Lord played better organ rock solos as far as i am concerned....i seen all 3....Emerson as far as i am concerned was the best player technically and creatively...but thats just me billy......i am one of a few people who does not think Jimi Hendrix was the best rock guitar player ever...he definitely was great, but was he the best?.....
Me and Eric Clapton respectfully disagree with you.

You have to admit, Hendrix did things no other rock guitarist has ever done. Not then, not since.

In regards to Lord, this was my favorite tune by him...

i think jeff beck was better than clapton...You have to admit, Hendrix did things no other rock guitarist has ever done....you mean like feedback and distortion?....great if you are high....i seen Hendrix when he was first getting going at the Ana,CC and seen him later when he was big...the second time he looked pretty wasted and played lots of feedback and distortion if he made a mistake who would know?....ill take guys from that era like Michael Bloomfield,Jeff Beck,Ritchie Blackmore,Phil Keaggy,Peter Green,Duane Allman over Hendrix...but hey thats me.....

What a bummer. I almost forgot about this band as they never get the airplay on the 'classic rock' stations.

I think they were one of the first to really be a headphone band. You know, smoke a bunch of weed or drop some acid, put on the headphones and just . . . . .
No, that was Pink Floyd. You could only listen to Floyd when you were high, because they played so slow. ELP, on the other hand, just kicked fuckin' ass!
seen Pink Floyd at the Sports Arena during their Dark Side tour 73-74 in 4 channel....played the whole LP....Gilmour was a pretty good guitarist....

ah Grand Funk.....i skipped seeing them with Black Sabbath opening at the CC to go to a party, and it was a good thing i did....a riot broke out and it was pretty destructive.....never forget that one....lol

my first one was Cream with Spirit opening in late 69 at the Anahiem CC.....one of the best live acts i ever saw was Thin Lizzy when they opened for Queen at the Forum in 76....those fuckers rocked the house down and got called back for an encore, was a fan after that....

who knows billy i have been in so many of these discussions in this forum.....i am a guy who is a fan of guitar bands, and Lizzy was one of the better ones, went to see Queen because my wife and my sister were big fans,so i went, glad i did....Queen was pretty good though,Brian May is a great player....

I mentioned in another thread honoring a recent rock star passing, that the 60's and 70's rockers will be dropping like flies now.
Sad, really sad.
Everybody except Keith Richards. Which is strange, because there are no more illegal drugs in the world........ Keith did them all. And he's still alive.

At least we got rid of the Bee Gees.

I like the Bee Gees.

I'm partial to Steve Walsh of Kansas.

no never did.....had the chance to.......they were at the convention center with the seeds and 1 or 2 other bands....went to a party instead....the dude i hung with in the early 70's played in a local band and used to get turned on to tickets for just about every concert in the area....i lost track of how many concerts we went to....

Guns, again:

"Rock star Keith Emerson killed himself because he feared he was no longer good enough as a musician, his girlfriend exclusively told The Mail on Sunday last night.

The 71-year-old founder and keyboard player of Emerson, Lake and Palmer was 'tormented with worry' about upcoming concerts in Japan because nerve damage to a hand had affected his playing, said Mari Kawaguchi.

She found Emerson's body when she returned to the apartment the couple shared in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, early on Friday morning.

He had shot himself with a gun he kept for protection."
