yep, almost every major country has a protection tariff on something they make that other's need but they don't want imported as that will hurt the companies that make that product for themselves

But it looks like many people still don't realize that it's not the other country who pays....WE (consumers) pay, through higher prices, as the importers pass the cost down to us.

Tariffs are a tax. It is surreal to me to see so many Republicans cheering for one of the largest tax hikes in US history, if not the largest.

The last time, we did major trade negotiations was during the first Trump administration, was the USMCA carried out by Trump. It took two years, only affecting trade with two countries. That same trade agreement he was responsible for, is now characterized by him as done by idiots. He is a lousy negotiator. His business acumen led to at least 4 of his bankruptcies, which left investors, creditor, contractors and suppliers stuck for the bill. At least one, was on a casino, (a business where the margin is consistently figured for the house to win), yet still, he managed to lose (loot) enough money, to make bankruptcy his favored option, to take even more for himself. He is a lousy businessman to trust with business or economic decisions.

This time, his tariff war takes on all the major countries of the world, along with many small exporting/importing countries, all at once. It makes no differentiation between allies and enemies. It even targets countries such as Australia, where we have a trade surplus and is a historic ally, to boot. The stock markets (participated in by 62% of American tax payers) are responding, predictably to his stupid unpredictability, and dropping more than ever seen, with businesses in this country pulling back, afraid to make a move due to the unpredictable business climate, and seeing no near term end to this unpredictability in sight.

There is a good chance, he will tank the economy, making the short term inflation of the last administration, look like peanuts on the floor. Congress should take back authority on tariffs, as he cannot be trusted with the savings, investments, markets and economy, the rest of us have to live with.
