I think the real mistake in our response to the pandemic, from Trump, Congress - everyone really - was in not framing it squarely as a wartime powers issue. Unlike most of the bullshit we apply the "war" metaphor to (drugs, terrorism, poverty, etc..) a pandemic is, very much, like a foreign invasion. It requires extraordinary and temporary (read: TEMPORARY) loss of liberty.

Trump had the right impulse, early on, in closing the borders. But for some reason he backed off. He seemed more interested in maintaining morale - even if it meant telling obvious lies - than in fighting the invasion.
