Doubling State’s 1,100 Wind Turbines Won’t Replace This One Coal/Gas Plant ( Michigan)

Your comparing sending the man to the moon with 800 year plus ancient wind mill technology?
Of course he isnt. What an idiotic post. The turbine and capacitor tech is cutting edge.

My ass it is...

.

The first electricity-generating windturbine was invented in 1888 in Cleveland, Ohio by Charles F. Brush. The turbine's diameter was 17 meters (50 feet), it had 144 rotor blades madeof cedar wood, and it generated about 12 kilowatts (kW) of power.

Then use natural gas.
We should be aiming to replace natural gas use.
Na, not really
It’s unlimited basically in this country… And extremely cheap. Up here in north western South Dakota I heated both my shop and my house for the whole winter last year for just under 600 bucks with natural gas.

I disagree.
First of all, natural gas is only cheap now because of new fracking techniques that actually work way too well and leak almost half the natural gas to the environment.
Second is that natural gas is in much smaller supply than oil in this country, and we only have a couple decades worth left.
What we do have hundreds of years worth is coal, not natural gas or oil.

end-of-fossil-fuels-graph.jpg

Even this graph is not quite accurate because coal is almost everywhere.
While natural gas requires not just the ancient 100 million year old swamp to start with, but also the salt dome to collect it.
That is why an all of the above strategy is best. New coal, oil and gas reserves are being found every day.
In North Dakota about 50 miles as the crow flies from here they have to constantly burn off the natural gas because they have so much of it. And as the saying goes... More coal, oil and gas are being made every day with or without our help.

Yes we are going to need it all.
Eventually, whether it is 100 years from now or 500 years, even will even likely be digging back up those nuclear waste sites. As fossil fuels deplete and use increases, things are going to get very tight.

But lets try to spin Intermittent power as wonderful...

They (the US Dept of Energy) have a plan for that. It’s called SMARTGrid. Very scary proposition too, if you ask me.

yeah, I had the same basic response to that. I was thinking, do we really want the entire electrical grid, setup with networked computer controls? Are you sure about that? Because last I checked, we still had Russian hackers able to encrypt a city network.

Hackers Demanding Ransoms Paralyze City Computer Systems In The U.S.

Baltimore had ransomware shut down the cities internet network.

Now you want the power grid of the country, on a networked control system? What happens when a really serious attack by a foreign power, shuts down half the country?

America has slightly over 400 coal plants. That means it would take about 800,000 wind turbines to replace all of our coal fire power plants. Just imagine how many birds they would slaughter every year. And they still require 100% backup!

Doubling State’s 1,100 Wind Turbines Won’t Replace This One Coal/Gas Plant

Michigan’s electric utilities gamble that the reliability of service won’t collapse.

Consumers Energy would have to double the number of wind turbines currently operating in this state to replace the electricity produced by just one of the coal- and gas-fired power plants it intends to close as part of its plans to rely more on renewable sources. The problem, however, is that those additional turbines only spin about one-third of the time, leaving a big energy gap for the households and businesses that rely on the company for their electricity.

..

regulated utilities and their vendors operate 1,107 industrial wind turbines in Michigan. These can produce 1,925.3 megawatts of electricity, but only when the wind is blowing.

Ontario got rid of all of its coal fired plants and replaced them with wind mills. We have so much power from them, we're selling it to Americans. Here's a clue - the wind is always blowing - always. We have thousands of windmills in our country. Even on hot muggy days when there's barely a breeze, the windmills are turning. Ironically, when it's really windy, they shut them down, for safety reasons.

You conservative idiots are clinging to outmoded systems and models. It will destroy your country. You're being left behind.
Mostof Ontario's power comes from hydroelectric. You are simply lying about how much comes from wind.

Every two thousand windmills is the equivalent of one coal fired power plant.
The new turbines power 8,000 homes each and they won`t ruin 3,000 miles of streams in my state like coal has. How much coal does it take to power 3,000 homes?
Can Wind Turbines Be Recycled? | Earth911.com
Your figures are obviously wrong. It's more like 250 homes:

How Many Homes Does A Wind Farm Power? – Alternative Energy HQ

So, a megawatt of wind generates virtually as much electricity for 225 to three hundred households’ use. But, it’s essential to think about that because wind will not blow at all times; it can’t be the sole source of power for that many households
A coal fired power plant can generate 1000 to 4000 times that much. The beautiful part is that they are online virtually 100% of the time and their down times are predictable.

Nothing like driving rates thru the roof in the name of your green god

There are a lot more benefits to wind power than just clean electricity. Initially our power was expensive. But our capital investment has been made, and production costs are dropping. We invested early in infrastructure and with rising costs for installations, ours are already bought and paid for.

There have been issues. The original energy contracts set the price of the power generated too high, in order to encourage investment, so the price was intitially high. Those contracts will end soon and will be renegotiated at market rates.

As for benefits - reduced acid rain has reduced loss of trees and crops, and fewer repairs to buildings and structures. Better air quality from no coal fired plants means people like me don't go to emergency in the hot weather due to air pollution. Deterioration in the air quality due to coal fired plants will increase American deaths, but also hospital visits and those costs as well.

Both your claims are pure fantasy. If wind power could compete on the market, the government wouldn't need to subsidize it. No one has ever demonstrated crop losses or tree losses from acid rain. They especially haven't demonstrated damage to buildings and structures.

It’s unlimited basically in this country… And extremely cheap.
It becomes less cheap when all pf the long term costs are figured in. But i agree that reacements should be more economical to be viable. Which isvyet another reason to pour money into subsidizing alt energy.
Lol
There’s a lot of the areas of this country that renewables do not work and a lot of areas where it does, wind certainly does not work up here in the northern plains and solar is hit or miss at best.
But you are making determinations based on current each. Thats not an appropriate response when discussing improving the tech.

Solar is never "hit or miss". The Sun shines everywhere on the planet, sometimes. The barrier to solar is capacitor tech.
You ever seen what hail storms do the solar panels up here in the northern plains?

Lol
Wind is far from viable affordable and reliable... It takes a lot of toxic elements to make the turbines and batteries, The wind doesn’t blow every day, and the efficiency of the turbines themselves can drop as much as 30% in the first year

I just think it's amazing a country which sent a man to the moon decades ago can't get away from coal.
Big money?
Yes and no. While, of course, corporations will protect their interests and their shareholders, coal is still more economical to a lot of people, in the short term.
True, If it ain’t broke don’t fix it

No one said that wind power is the only alternative.

I agree: nuclear power across the board.
Possibly, yes, but there are barriers to that. The Obama administration offered 4 government-guaranteed loans to entice companies to build power plants. Not one company took up the opportunity.

Why would they? The NIMBY and BANANA idiots will stonewall it for decades, and they know it.

Most nuclear power plants are a long way from town. After 3 Mile Island, people are quite rightly worried about nuclear power plants in their back yards. There are studies coming out of Europe showing increased cases of childhood lukemia in children living withint 5 kilometers of a nuclear plant.

A recent study in Ontario showed elevated rates of thyroid cancer and lukemia in adults living within 25 kilometers of Ontario's three nuclear power plants. Many people in the medical community criticized the study as having been "diluted" by using the 25 k radius, as opposed to the 5 k radius used in the European studies. I have an uncle who used to work at Darlington, who died young from cancer. A guy I was dating worked at Chalk River from the 1970's until he retired a few years ago. He's had 2 go-rounds with cancer. It should be part of the disclosure in your contract when you sign up as a nuclear engineer - you will die horribly of cancer.

Bullshit. The radiation level in the plant is barely (if any) above background and constantly monitored.

You don’t know what you are talking about. Let me guess. You are a Trump supporter.

1. High speed rail is an investment for people like me that travels to Las Vegas then back to Ca the same day.

2. Left has nothing to do with the dying energy like coal.

3. Like 20 years from now with all the car manufacturers are switching to electric vehicles. What do you think will happen to gasoline?

California is investing billions in clean energy away from coal.

Renewable Energy

California is leading the nation toward a 100 percent clean energy future and addressing climate change. The California Energy Commission plays a pivotal role by developing and mandating programs that use renewable energy, incentives for energy technology installation, renewable energy grants, and by ensuring the efforts benefit all Californians.

You are deflecting and off topic. Liberal policies HURT THE POOR admit it you sack of useless liberal talking points. :eusa_hand:

Here is the problem with people like you.

Why the hell do you blame the left when they have nothing to do with a dying energy?
Did the left miraculously create and produce natural gas?
Did the left miraculously designed and produce solar industries?

Natural gas and solar energy are the primary caused of the coal industry to collapse. Both are cleaner and atmosphere friendly compared to coal polluting the atmosphere.

You don’t know shit. You are a veteran here you should know better.

Its not about me, its about LIBERAL POLICIES HURT THE POOR. Admit it. Plus you stupid dumb fucks the coal will just be shipped to China and burned dirty, the pollution will drift back across the pacific and land on our shores.

Why are you so concerned about the pollution coming from China? They are cleaning their act.

Yet you are not concerned polluting your own neighborhood.

I'm pointing out that liberals are stupid. Mission accomplished.

Stupid? Really?

So..... What does the rightist do? Watch what happen then wonder what happened.

Solar business, wind turbines and natural gas are booming businesses. So prove to me where and why you think that is stupid?

America has coal plants. America has natural gas plants. America has oil fired plants. America has nuclear plants.

With all those ways of driving steam turbines, why do you think the only alternative is wind turbines? Couldn't wind be included in electrical generation the way coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear are?
The AGW cult believes that only solar and wind are viable alternatives.
Biomass, geothermal, tidal, hydrogen fuel cells. There are lots,of,alternatives. You should check, out the Exxon sponsored Fox News report on alternative sustainable energy!

I'm kidding! Exxon and Fox don't want you to know anything but what they tell you. Sorry.
Hydrogen fuel cells do not produce energy. They consume it. The other sources you mentioned will never be anything other than minor sources. They've never managed to construct a viable means of producing tidal energy.

Lets not forget the left routinely attack wind and solar as harmful to the environment or obstructing their ocean views. These people are insane. Its like tax increases, so long as its not impacting them personally they are all for it. As soon as they feel the impact they squeal like stuck pigs.

You are lying.

Show me where the left attack wind and solar energy.

You Do you know it’s extremely toxic to make the supplies for alternative energy?

Stupid shits on the left don't want to discuss how much toxic waste is produced manufacturing their 'green' alternative energy.

What is green alternative energy?

Dude. You are not worried with coal polluting the atmosphere?

Where are you coming from all these crap?
