After I made my comment, I rechecked my tax return. You are correct.

Except disability SS is not taxable at all and none of it is until you reach your standard deduction. My wife and I both get SS and I had a huge backpay from my SSDI. We paid not one dime.

We're not talking about SS Disability, we're talking about SS Retirement.

But on checking, SS Diability retirement is considered taxable income using some rules I'm not familiar with so I I'm ignorant of SS Diability. My wife is a disabled Vet and her Military Disability is not taxable.

The IRS says that under certain circumstances SS Diability is taxable but explaining it is beyond me.

Sure, which is why - as I said - I typically refer to SS Retirement. Which was the important piece of the post.

So it's clear we are talking about SS benefits paid to retirees.

Too late, once an entitlement is given it is almost impossible to withdraw. Unfortunately SS has been a pot of money that our greedy politicians cannot resist dipping into. It was supposed to help the elderly but ended up being a slush fund that returns a meager 1% maybe. Most of what a worker contributes is frittered away in useless government spending. Also, we are living too long today which negatively impacts SS.

Teaching children about money management and finances would have been a better strategy but, politicians needed a political entitlement to garner votes. Mostly from Democrats.

Not a function of the federal government. My schools taught it and my kids learned it. Why didn't yours? Perhaps that is the fault of your local schools?

To solve the problem, FDR created social security, which became a forced retirement system, so whether you planned well, or you fiddled away your summer, you had a safe secure adequate retirement.
