For all the sturm and drang about “dead people on the social security rolls”… there has been no accounting of how many of them actually draw any benefits.

Know why? Because they don’t.

Nor to my understanding thousands of indictments to arrest all these people.

There is little chance for retired people to commit fraud. You work 30 years, reach 62, put in for SS and you get it.
When someone dies, SS is notified when a Death Certificate is issued and payments stop.

The REAL FRAUD is in Social Security Disability.
Fake claims, the person gets better, they are not seriously disabled.

Want to stop that. Hire more SS investigators.

The commerce secretary Lutnick probably has a net worth of between $2 billion to $4 billion, according to various sources.

I'm sure if his 95 year old mother-in-law didn't get her check, and needed a few bucks to tide her over until the next months check, he could afford to just give her the money.

But not every senior has a billionaire son-in-law, and not getting a check, means not having money for groceries, or rent, or utilities.

I didn't say ANYTHING about planned benefit cuts as a change to SS Retirement.

I was addressing when the Trust Fund is exhausted and not longer able to supplement current revenues. Once the Trust Fund is exhausted benefits WILL be cut by 25%. Currently that will happen circa 2034. If SS benefits become "tax free" the Trust will be exhausted sooner.

Basic math.

(Assuming no other action to make-up the shortfall between revenues collected and benefits paid.)

To solve the problem, FDR created social security, which became a forced retirement system, so whether you planned well, or you fiddled away your summer, you had a safe secure adequate retirement.

Income tax gives the federal government additional funding with which they can pay social security.
Remember, the federal government reimburses all those social security IOU's from the general fund.

That's true, but he is saying it will reduce the trust fund. I pay no taxes on my SS anyway.

That would have no impact on my contributions to the trust fund. He is confused, just like about SSDI not being funded by the SS Trust Fund, as SSI is funded by general tax revenue.

Except if you're only getting social security, you probably don't make enough to have to pay federal income taxes.
Of course if you have a 401-k, and another pension, you make enough to pay income tax.

It was similar to the law Ronald Reagan signed where your social security benefits were reduced if you received a federal pension.
