“Political tags - such as royalist, communist, democrat, populist, fascist, liberal, conservative, and so forth - are never basic criteria. The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire.”
“I sent my flowers across the hall to Mrs Nixon but her husband remembered what a Democrat I am and sent them back.” Bette Davis
“In a Republican district I was a Republican. In a Democratic district I was a Democrat. And in a doubtful district, I was Doubtful. But I was always for Erie.” Jack Gould
"Clinton was a pretty good president for a Republican."
Michael Moore
"I am a Republican. I'm loyal to the party of Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. And I believe that my party, in some ways, has strayed from those principles, particularly on the issue of fiscal discipline."
John McCain
"It is important that the United States remain a two-party system. I'm a fellow who likes small parties and the Republican Party can't be too small to suit me."
Lyndon B. Johnson
"Senator John F. Kennedy, Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. I want to repeat through this wire the congratulations and best wishes I extended to you on television last night. I know that you will have united support of all Americans as you lead the nation in the cause of peace and freedom during the next four years." Vice President Nixon
"Vice President Nixon, Los Angeles, California. Your sincere good wishes are gratefully accepted. You are to be congratulated on a fine race. I know that the nation can continue to count on your unswerving loyalty in whatever effort you undertake, and that you and I can maintain our long-standing cordial relations in the years ahead. Sincerely, John Kennedy."
"My congratulations to you for the victory you have just won at the polls. I will be sending you promptly a more comprehensive telegram suggesting certain measures that may commend themselves to you as you prepare to take over next January the responsibilities of the Presidency. Signed, Dwight D. Eisenhower
I thought I would add these quotes to show that Democrats, Republicans all share the same love of country and I suspect that when it comes to basic things many agree. It's how we get there that we tend to disagree, but in that disagreement if we recognize that solutions to problems are not singular and involve the input of many. Wishing someone's policy to fail is not the same as wishing the President to fail, as I pointed out above there are areas in which people agree and disagree and it's never an all or nothing thing as many would wish it to be. In my opinion the office of President can be respected and at the same time in that respect does not mean an automatic agreement with the person that sits in the office. Even after a very contested Presidential election and even though people disagree with the persons policy they still refer to the person in it as Mr. President out of respect of the office. So when people utter this statement thats been tossed around so much lately , remember that honest dissent and disagreement is what this nation is all about. Just something to think about here, do you think that the people that protested President Bush on many occasions would meet the same standard that people are trying to hold some Republicans to today?
