Do you think we can stop COVID-19 spread in a month?

As Ben Franklin is famous for saying:
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.

If EVERYONE took responsibility to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus ... for “only” ONE MONTH by adhering to strict 3-W guidelines (masks, social distancing, hand washing before touching face), would we not beat the pandemic nationally with our borders closed?
Of course, we would need to do a strict “lockdown”, but it would be cost-effective in the long run, like taking 1 step backwards before taking 2 or 3 steps forward.

Unfortunately, there are always a few egocentric individuals who don’t cooperate with reason & civility to mess things up for everyone else!
.
That would not stop the spread of the disease, it would only delay the spread. After the one month was up and life went back to normal, the spread would continue unabated. You have two choices with something like this, shut down indefinitely hoping a medical prevention or treatment will emerge or balance the need for people to live their lives and manage the spread the best you can, knowing that you cannot totally prevent infections.
If EVERYONE adhered to the medical advice, and contact tracing was used to contain the spread (if there were miscues), how would the virus continue spreading beyond control within locked borders?
Other countries have done a great job at containment, including New Zealand, Vietnam, and China too.
.
How long would we have to maintain locked borders and being sealed in our homes? My point is, whenever people come in contact with other people, the virus will spread. Minus vaccines and/or treatments, people will get sick and some will die. The only question is how quickly.

Hey, look at UK now and it’s conservative government, which announced a near-total national lockdown for a MONTH!

.
Notice the title from your link. "Boris Johnson Sets New Lockdown for England to SLOW Coronavirus", emphasis mine. That's an acknowledgement that it's not going to stop the virus, just slow it down. After the month is up and people come out of hiding, there will be another spike of infections, hospitalizations and deaths.

COVID-19 can be beat ... if the basics are followed, as I suggested.
Why can’t USA be as successful as ...
- Australia

- Taiwan
- Thailand
- Vietnam ???

Perhaps we need a COMPETENT leader, as in President!

Its going to take some drastic measures. I don't think we have it in us. And our true enemies across the oceans are watching.

Notice how cases are spiking more and more as we approach the election. Big surprise? It's the main bargaining chip the dems have. The media they own has totally twisted the reality of the virus. It is not a big threat anymore. I work with the public and never stopped working for the public. Most people I work with AND most of our clientele just wear cloth masks...which if you're dealing with a virus as dangerous as they say this one is, would be ridiculous! But only a handful of people in my company ever got it and they all came back and were fine and didn't die, and there was never any panic or virulent spread. The town we serve also has not had any excessive cases, deaths or severity that would be any more concerning than the flu, and I can honestly liken it to the annual flu people get every year. The way it is exaggerated by the media, the dems and the "insiders" at the CDC is pure bullshit. They are spiking the reports to get people to vote democrat...because "only democrats are smart enough to see the apocalypse coming". :ack-1: :auiqs.jpg:

A virus can only be "beaten" by immunity. Without that, all you're doing is locking people away, hoping they won't be exposed. Thankfully, it's not that deadly a disease and while too many die, the vast majority who contract it suffer only mild symptoms or don't even realize they caught it.

NO!
Lock downs, not matter how strict can not possibly ever work.
They only were tried once before, in 1918, and were a total failure that increased a 2 month flu into 2 years, killing 1% of the population.
Locks downs do not work because they are deliberately slow, and try to flatten the curve, making it last longer and thus infecting infinitely more people.
Lock downs force the infected and vulnerable into the same food lines, thus ensuring spread.

What does work is full quarantine.
Full quarantine works because it is fast.
There is full universal testing on a regular basis, so then you quickly find and isolate those infected, tracking their contacts to eliminate any spread at all.
In 2 weeks, it can be all over.
Quarantined infected have food brought to them, so ensure there is no spread.

Another choice that works is herd immunity, where healthy volunteers are deliberately infected to quickly increase the % of those who are immune in the population. That can take a few weeks longer, but also works much better than locks downs, to save lives.

Nope. Lockdowns, masks, social distancing will not stop the virus. No matter how long you force people to perform these worthless act, when you stop, the virus will come right back.

No Australia and New Zealand are much easier because they are islands, and have little travel or initial infection.
They are using quarantine methods, not lock down, "flattening of the curve" that stretches out epidemic duration.
The way to tell the difference is quarantines work fast, and use contract tracing.
If you are not doing contact tracing, then you are not doing quarantine and it won't work.

You can actually end an epidemic faster than we are now by speeding it up.
If the virus gets too greedy and infects all those in frequent contract with one infected, then the virus has no new victim to support it, and it dies.
That is who herd immunity works, and we could accelerate it by deliberate infection of healthy volunteers.
We could have ended it in 3 weeks, saving hundreds of thousands of lives.

Given the low mortality of the disease, the only justification for doing it the way we did is avoiding overwhelming hospitals. In the past, we quarantined the sick. This time we quarantined the well. Odd.

There is no rational for doing it the way we did.
By stretching it out by "flattening the curve", we maximized the hospitalization load.
Remember, once someone gets sick enough to require hospitalization, they are going to stay in there for months, so will accumulate.
The way to stop over loading hospitals is to end the epidemic quickly, and ensure the vulnerable stay quarantines from the rest of the population.
Instead, we mixed everyone together.
We did not even quarantine those testing positive.
We did not quarantine anyone.

Impossible!!
Vaccine is coming in 5/6 months

Possible with full quarantine or herd immunity, but not masks.
They only work 95%, and 1% is all you need for infection to spread.

Vaccine not worth waiting for.
Once this is gone, its not coming back because we don't normally interact with bats.

There are 2 ways to end any epidemic, and only 2 ways.
One is total quarantine. But that is very hard and expensive, because it is not just a partial lock down, but total, and requires contact tracing.
The other is herd immunity. That is very easy and just as quick. All you have to do is cause virus burn out by speeding up the infection of potential hosts. That means you not only let is spike, but deliberately infect healthy volunteers, so that the virus quickly uses up all the local hosts, and disappears. That is historically what has ended ALL epidemics ever, in all of history and probably before that as well.

The one strategy to never use because it never has or can work, is partial lock down.
That just prevents herd immunity and makes an epidemic last potentially forever.
