GOP-held state legislatures in Wisconsin and Michigan are trying to limit new Democratic governors’ powers

“The last election changed the state in a way that apparently the legislature has decided to not accept,” said Evers, who defeated Gov. Scott Walker (R) in November. Evers told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that “everything’s on the table” in terms of attempting to block the GOP plan, including legal action.

The Republicans, who have enjoyed single-party rule in the state for close to a decade, are gearing up this week to pass a suite of changes in an “extraordinary session” — which is where the legislature calls itself back after the session ends — that would, among other things, limit early voting; move the Wisconsin 2020 presidential primary from March, when Democratic turnout will be high, to April (an apparent effort to boost the chances of a conservative judge in that April’s state Supreme Court election); restrict the governor’s ability to make certain appointments; and otherwise hand more power to the state legislature.

In Michigan, where Democrats last month won the governor’s mansion as well as the races for attorney general and secretary of state, Republican lawmakers last week introduced measures that would water down the authority of those positions on campaign finance oversight and other legal matters. All three statewide winners are women, as one Detroit Free Press columnist pointed out.

A spokeswoman for the incoming secretary of state Jocelyn Benson decried the move as “shameful,” the Free Press reported.

The moves in both states have drawn comparisons to Republican efforts

in North Carolina in 2016, when lawmakers pushed through legislation limiting the authority of Roy Cooper, the state’s Democratic governor, after he defeated incumbent Gov. Pat McCrory (R).

What can I say, good luck to Trump, Trump is going to be impeached, the GOP will have no choice in the Senate. The GOP has played partisan and dirty for a long time and now its finally noticed just how underhanded they are. Two can play at the same game, and I hope the newly elected govenors write executive orders to do away with whatever the GOP puts in before the end of the year.

You seem to have forgotten the more recent mayor of Detroit who went to prison in 2008 for perjury and obstruction of justice. Oh, and by the way, Kwame Kilpatrick is a democrat.

Thanks for reminding us .

Ex-Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick lands in NJ prison with a camp

According to the Bureau of Prisons, Kilpatrick, 47, is now serving his 28-year corruption sentence in New Jersey at the Federal Correctional Institution at Fort Dix, a minimum security prison with 4,302 inmates. Of those, nearly 300 live at the nearby low-security prison camp, similar to the one that former Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers served her 3-year bribery sentence at in West Virginia.

Poor Monica. Behind bars. ...so sad

Republicans DO NOT GIVE A FUCK -- and if democrats keep thinking they can just continue to compromise and work together with these people; they will do the country a disservice...

You can't reason with a party that rejects reason and you can't shame a party that is so depraved that they have no shame.....

Ya know, I listened to NPR this morning, and I agree with you, this is awful.

But, with all the dirty tricks the other side used in the elections around the nation?

meh, I have a hard time giving a shit. They all suck.

None of them care about the folks as much as they care about the corporations and their own power, so, whatever.

If you think Trump is going to be impeached? You are nuts. The elites intend to keep him there in order to teach the nation a lesson to any future would be usurper. The lesson is this, unless you are part of the club, don't dare even think to run for president.

So in your mind, Penny, Trump is going to be impeached and the Senate has "no choice".

This is how you probably figured the Jewish Holocaust never happened. You wave the magic wand in your head and HEY! There it is. Penny, do you still believe in Santa Claus too?

Yes, facts will win out in the long run. No I do not believe in Santa Claus and reindeer do not fly, but I believe there was a St. Nicolaus.

Born in Patara, a land that is part of present-day Turkey, circa 280, St. Nicholas was a Christian bishop who helped the needy. After his death, the legend of his gift-giving grew. St. Nicholas transformed into the legendary character called Santa Claus, who brings Christmas presents to children around the world.

---------------------------------------------
by the way I see now they have a teacher in NJ, Ohio, and Tx all telling elementary kids there is no Santa,
and Hannity said it was fake news.

What do you care about facts, Penny? We know you are impervious to facts

Check it out, all over the net, just put in teacher says no Santa Clause. Hard to know if anyone of the stores is true, I think its something Christians made up, as you know there is a war on Christianity.
But not muslims... you dems love you some muslims... throw homos off roofs, shoot homos up in a night club, cut women's clits out, make women wear a black bad over their entire body and treat them like dogs... yeah... you dems like that shit.

It was the Snyder-appointed overseer that made the decision to change water source...against the wishes of the Commission. It was a bad decision, but an unintentional bad decision, I believe. Nobody really understood the problems or the changes required to make it work. And like in many other cases, it was the 2 year coverup and the delays in rectification that was the real problem. So you can knock off the blaming Democrats. All those jailed over this cluster are Republicans. And the sad fact is that Flint is the famous poster child for water pollution but it is only a small sample of the effects of aging infrastructure that is being ignored all across this land.

Good. Play hardball.

The picture does, when was the last time Detroit had a republican mayor?

.

A long time ago, no Republican is smart enough to be in charge of a city.

So only Democrat mayor's of Detroit end up in jail?
One that I'm aware of and the last Republican one:

Behind bars. ...so sad

I was just trying to help Penelope with her dedication to facts and all. LOL Yes, dear Monica...wife to the stellar democrat John Conyers who served as US Rep for MI 1965-2017. He resigned over sexual harassment claims. Got bit by the #MeToo bug.

A bill was introduced by the GOP in Mi to intervene if they disagreed with the court system of MI since a female Dem AG got voted in.

A gov in WI says the new Dem gov should not have the same power as he did.

The NERVE is right!!!!

And?

Really, the GOP has been in charge of the Senate in MI since 1984, The SOS since 1995 and the Attn Gen since 2001 and Engler for 12 years, 12 years with Devos ruined Detroit public schools and Snyder was behind the Flint water crisis.
We have pollution with PFAS everywhere, the road are bad everywhere.

They have gerrymandered the state so bad it hard to get them out, but the people voted by voting in the Gov, AG, and SOS all women and all democrats. We will clean this state up.

Both, Detroit and Flint were run by Democrats for more than half a century. Yet, somehow it's Republican fault that Detroit bankrupted, and Flint decided to get off clean water supply to fill their pockets.
