In fact, I doubt the battery of the timer would have enough voltage/amperage to set off a blasting cap. An additional battery would have been required.

What you have, then, is some of the elements of a bomb, but not all the required elements. It could never have gone off unless exposed to flame or a strong shock.

What did they "apply spark or friction" to? How did they "apply spark or friction" to material that was inside a plastic pipe?
