Okay folks, here is what I see.

The Democrats are shifting money from a program that is over funded. Point for not wasting money.

The program being funded can save money by improving the health of youth. Sounds good to me.

Am I losing my conservative edge?

Democrats who reluctantly slashed a food stamp program to fund a state aid bill may have to do so again to pay for a top priority of first lady Michelle Obama.

The House will soon consider an $8 billion child nutrition bill that’s at the center of the first lady’s “Let’s Move” initiative. Before leaving for the summer recess, the Senate passed a smaller version of the legislation that is paid for by trimming the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as food stamps.

The proposed cuts would come on top of a 13.6 percent food stamp reduction in the $26 billion Medicaid and education state funding bill that President Obama signed this week.


Food stamps have made multiple appearances on the fiscal chopping block because Democrats have few other places to turn to offset the cost of legislation.

Party leaders raided the budget to find off-setting tax increases and spending cuts to pay for their top legislative priorities, including the roughly $900 billion healthcare law. Congressional pay-as-you-go rules require lawmakers to offset all non-emergency spending.

This is JUST HILARIOUS! After lecturing us for DECADES how this program was needed to feed the poor, they are slashing it right and left to keep special interests (like Michelle) happy.

And why do we need a nutrionist in schools? I THOUGHT THAT'S WHAT PARENTS DO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Leave it to the government to think only THEY can do the job the Founding Fathers thought was best left to the individual and families.

First, "Michelle's" nutrition bill hasn't gone anywhere yet, so there you go jumping to conclusions again. At least the article cited was honest.

Second, I find it hilarious that an uber right-winger is suddenly defending the uber left-wing (who want both programs in place and find the funding somewhere else).

For me, there's always a reason for "defending" him and that's because there is always cause and effect. While I almost always support his cause, I often disagree with the effect (i.e., the way health care reform was structured).

I totally disagree. I think Obama made up his mind that certain domestic priorities were GOING to be put in place during his presidency, regardless of the backlash. Again, I'm becoming more and more convinced that he will not even run for a second term, preferring instead to have a legacy similar to LBJ who pushed through major domestic reform, was assailed because of it at the time, but is now seen by historians as the champion of social programs the country is now proud of.

Obama will go on to support either Joe Biden or Hillary Clinton. You all should know that contrary to the majority opinion, I predicted that Ronald Reagan would pick George H.W. Bush as his vice president (bitter rivals), AND that Barack Obama would pick Joe Biden as his vice president (for his expertise in foreign affairs). (I also was laughed at constantly because I kept predicting that O.J. Simpson would beat the murder charge based solely on reasonable doubt. So I'm good at this. )

In bush's budget he submitted. It did not get thru congress though.

Every year when LIHEAP (low income heating allowance) comes up for renewal, Republicans want to cut it or keep it level funded, even when oil and other energy prices have marched skyward every year since the program began).

Republicans got NCLB passed, then failed to adequately fund it causing the states to eat the costs and having to raise state taxes and other fees to pay for it.

Good lord, the list is endless. Republicans like wars and foreign aid, period.
