Yeah, I know, CA has the highest registration in the nation. I bought a 3/4 ton pickup in 2010 and they charged me over $600 the first year and it went down minimally for the next three years as it was based on value and the fact that it COULD be used in a commercial enterprise--so it had to be registered commercial. I left in 2014 and now pay about $50. I am sure they would require new cars to have 5G reporting capability on the odometers. As electric vehicles become more prevalent, the mileage tax will become the gas tax replacement.

When it comes to taxation, Progressives are very clever

Take the Federal Income tax, for example. Anyone know how they got it done? They first tried to instigate a federal income tax but SCOTUS struck it down at the turn of the 20th century, so they simply hatched a scheme to add it to the Constitution.

To gain support, Progressives sided with evangelicals to legalize Prohibition. Alcoholism today is the one drug that kills the most people, but back then it was even worse. But the reason Progressives sided with Evangelicals was that the Federal government at the time was heavily funded by alcohol sales. So they convinced Evangelicals to support their Federal Income tax to replace the revenue produced by alcohol sales if they were going to ban alcohol. First they voted to pass the Federal Income tax and then voted for Prohibition. But Progressives had no intention of making Prohibition work. In fact, bootleggers were coming to the Capital to sell alcohol to the very Congressmen that voted for Prohibition. Essentially, they just let Prohibition fail because they already had the Federal Income tax they were after. Then once alcohol was legal once again, they resumed the taxation of alcohol to help fund the Federal government. In effect, the whole scheme more than doubled the revenue given to the Federal government, and to this very day, the state sells alcohol directly to the populace for revenue.
