There is a fundamental difference between killing someone affiliated with some group and killing someone affiliated with a sovereign nation. Both may be terrorists bent of doing us harm but only the later would be considered an act of war.

Imo it's more about the negative effects of killing the guy at an Iraqi military facility. The Iraqi govt is pissed and our ability to attack Isis in n. Iraq and Syria is lessened. We could have killed him in Syria, but the Russians might have been annoyed. Killing him in Lebanon might have been bad. I wonder if the guy travelled to the nothern hinterlands of Iraq. A drone attack in the desert would have had less bad political ramifications.

But the bottom line it that since Trump pulled out of the nuclear deal, Iran and the US have been escalating military confrontations. We chose to abondon the nuclear deal and go back on our agreement with the coalition, rather than going to the coalition and asking for cooperation on forcing Iran to stop supporting terror … as Mathis, Kelly and McMasters wanted to do. Trump chose this course, and it isn't ending with just killing this guy, who without a doubt had killed Americans and was going to target more. But the question is whether the danger he posed is less than the danger killing him increases. But then, Iran is not going to be deterred by targeted assasinations. Iran is pretty good at those.

These three senators were part of the Senate Select Intelligence Committee. They went on to describe the killing of terror leader Anwar al-Awlaki:

'Mr. al-Aulaqi [sic] clearly made a conscious decision to join an organized fighting force that was (and is) engaged in planning and carrying out attacks against the United States,” the senators wrote. “By taking on a leadership role in this organization, involving himself in ongoing operational planning against the United States, and demonstrating the capacity and intent to carry out these operations, he made himself a legitimate target for military action... We do not believe al-Awlaki’s citizenship provides a basis for concluding that he is immune from a use of force abroad”'

Does the same rationale apply to Soleimani? Or has it suddenly changed?"
