That went down to 70% as part of JFK's tax reforms. As a result, we paid for two world wars, built an interstate highway system, infrastructure that was second to none at the time, even put MEN ON THE ******* MOON! The National Debt was a piddling 600 Billion after all that.

Then Ronnie Reagan came along and cut taxes for rich people and started pissing away money on $600 toilet seats and $200 hammers. By the time and Bush were done, the National Debt was 4 Trillion and rising. Clinton finally got our debt situation under control, but along came Baby Bush who jacked it up to 11 Trillion. It's at 23 Trillion now. Will probably be a lot more before Trump gets done desperately trying to shock the economy back to life.
