The linchpin of the 1948 Democratic Party platform became its support for civil rights legislation. Many Democrats were wary of supporting the platform because they feared that the party would splinter over the opposing views of civil rights. The delegates from the southern states were vocal in their opposition, and other delegates began to waver. Then hubert h. humphrey, the delegate from Minnesota and mayor of Minneapolis, gave a speech in which he urged his fellow delegates to "get out of the shadow of states' rights and walk forth-rightly into the bright sunshine of human rights!" Humphrey's passionate words were the catalyst for the majority of the Democratic Party delegates to vote for the platform planks that called for a federal anti-lynching law, the Abolition of poll taxes in federal elections, desegregation of the armed forces, and creation of a permanent Fair Employment Practices Committee that would prevent racial discrimination in federal jobs.
As many had feared, a majority of southern delegates, including all 22 members of the Mississippi delegation and 13 from Alabama, walked out of the convention and formed their own party—the States' Rights Democratic Party. The Dixiecrats, as they were also known, held a one-day convention on July 17, 1948, in Birmingham, Alabama, in which they nominated South Carolina governor strom thurmond for president and chose Mississippi governor Fielding L. Wright as their vice-presidential candidate.
The States' Rights Party sought to take votes from both the Democratic and Republican parties by emphasizing the sovereignty of the states and by denouncing Truman and the Democratic Party's proposed civil rights legislation as an immense threat to the states. In Alabama the Dixiecrats succeeded in preventing President Truman's name from being placed on the election ballot.
The Democratic Party was greatly weakened by the defection of the conservative Dixiecrats and also by the liberals who had left to join the Progressive Party that nominated former vice president and secretary of agriculture Henry A. Wallace to be its presidential candidate. Nevertheless, President Harry S. Truman won reelection. Although Truman was reelected over Dewey by a very narrow margin, that vote resulted in the biggest upset in the history of United States presidential campaigns.
The States' Rights Party carried South Carolina, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama. Thurmond and Wright received approximately 1.2 million votes and 39 electoral votes. In 1954 Thurmond was elected as a Democratic senator. Thurmond joined with other conservative Democrats and used the filibuster and other political strategies to oppose civil rights legislation. Thurmond was reelected in 1956 and 1960. In 1964 Thurmond led a number of conservative southern national and state elected officials who switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party. Thurmond was reelected in 1966, 1972, 1978, 1984, 1990, and 1996. After being reelected in 1996 the 94-year-old Thurmond, announced that he would finish out his term but would no longer run for reelection.

Forgetting the fact that Mr. Haley was forced to admit he plagiarized the entire story, and that the story Mr. Haley told never could have occurred as it was told in the miniseries, many people today actually believe that Roots and the story told was an accurate historical account – especially the part about how Kunta Kinte was captured by whites, aka Christians. In actuality, the overwhelming majority of slave trading was done through Muslim slave traders. And African nations profited off selling their “black brothers and sisters.” The Nyamwezi tribe of modern day Tanzania helped to establish a slave pipeline that started in Angola.

The Dahomey (now Benin) nation rulers profited off the slave trade. In the 1840s, King Gezo said he would “do anything the British would want apart from giving up the slave trade.” We haven’t even touched on the number of African-Americans who not only owned but also traded slaves. One of the more famous of the black plantation owners was Nicolas Metoyer, who along with his family owned over 200 slaves.

And how about the African-Americans who owned white slaves? Think this didn’t occur? In the late 1600s through early 1700s, black males were buying indentured servants (usually white) for their farms.

If you want to have a real debate about race relations in the USA, as all liberals say they want to have, great, let’s bring it on. Talk about slavery throughout history, and how Muslims profited off the slave trade as much if not more than did Christians. How blacks have sold their own “brothers and sisters” into slavery. We as Americans should and need to stop being afraid of offending someone, and teach real and true history. Who knows, maybe it would get some of our youngsters to start appreciating their country again? And who knows? Maybe, just maybe, the Israelis would get a nice reparations check from Egypt and other Arab nations.

Okay, but didn’t all the old segregationist senators leave the Democratic party and become Republicans after 1964? No, just one did: Strom Thurmond. The rest remained in the Democratic party — including former Klansman Robert Byrd, who became president pro tempore of the Senate.





Former racists of both parties renounced their old views (as Kevin D. Williamson points out, Lyndon Johnson himself voted against anti-lynching laws and poll-tax repeals), and neither party has a perfect record on racial matters by any stretch.

But it is a libel to suggest that the Republican party, the anti-slavery party, the party of Lincoln, and the party that traditionally supported civil rights, anti-lynching laws, and integration, became the racist party after 1964.

The “solid south” Democratic voting pattern began to break down not in the 1960s in response to civil rights but in the 1950s in response to economic development and the Cold War.

(Black voters in the north, who had been reliable Republicans, began to abandon the GOP in response to the New Deal, encouraged by activists like Robert Vann to “turn Lincoln’s picture to the wall. That debt has been paid in full.”)

In the 1940s, the GOP garnered only about 25 percent of southern votes.

The big break came with Eisenhower’s victories. Significant percentages of white southerners voted for Ike even though the Democratic party remained firmly segregationist and even though Eisenhower backed two civil-rights bills and enforced the Brown decision by federalizing the National Guard.

They also began to send GOP representatives to the House. These Republican gains came not from the most rural and “deep south” regions, but rather from the newer cities and suburbs. If the new southern Republican voters were white racists, one would have expected Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia to be the first to turn.


Instead, as Gerard Alexander notes in “The Myth of the Racist Republicans,” the turn toward the GOP began in Virginia, North Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, and Florida. Eisenhower did best in the peripheral states.

Alexander concludes: “The GOP’s southern electorate was not rural, nativist, less educated, afraid of change, or concentrated in the . . . Deep South. It was disproportionately suburban, middle-class, educated, young, non-native southern, and concentrated in the growth points that were the least ‘Southern’ parts of the south.”

In the 1840s, King Gezo said he would “do anything the British would want apart from giving up the slave trade.” We haven’t even touched on the number of African-Americans who not only owned but also traded slaves. One of the more famous of the black plantation owners was Nicolas Metoyer, who along with his family owned over 200 slaves.

And how about the African-Americans who owned white slaves? Think this didn’t occur? In the late 1600s through early 1700s, black males were buying indentured servants (usually white) for their farms.

If you want to have a real debate about race relations in the USA, as all liberals say they want to have, great, let’s bring it on. Talk about slavery throughout history, and how Muslims profited off the slave trade as much if not more than did Christians. How blacks have sold their own “brothers and sisters” into slavery. We as Americans should and need to stop being afraid of offending someone, and teach real and true history. Who knows, maybe it would get some of our youngsters to start appreciating their country again? And who knows? Maybe, just maybe, the Israelis would get a nice reparations check from Egypt and other Arab nations.
