Democrats 21st Century Foreign Policy: The Anti-Bush Doctorine
Many moons ago, in a time when the 42nd President was ignoring genocide in Rwanda and doing his all to throw Bosnia's defense into the bloody hands of violent Islamic fundamentalists funded by Iran and Saudi Arabia, Democrats in government and Congress saw themselves as the party of human rights and the advance of freedom. Republicans were cynical realists, by and large incapable of understanding the spread of democracy and peace Clinton's foreign policy was (supposedly) creating. Remember, they said, this was the party of Nixon, the party of Reagan and the contras, the party of Bush, whose Secretary Of State had declared "we don't have a dog in this fight (Bosnia)" and left Bosnian Muslims and Croats to be rounded up in concentration camps by fascist, murderous Serbs.
Incidentally, they avoided criticizing "our firm allies in Europe" (many of whom were busily re-arming Saddam Hussein and helping him to cheat the sanctions regime), who had so badly mishandled the Serb fascism in the Balkans they were close to allowing a firestorm of ethnic hatred to ripe Southern Europe apart again. Remember, they said, these were the Europeans who had been so right when Reagan was (supposedly) so wrong.
Fast forward to the present day, at a time when the American engineered promotion and expansion of freedom and stability around the world has found many successes in Georgia, Ukraine, Afghanistan and Iraq, and Democrats have become the cynical realists they long accused Republicans of being. Their failed presidental candidate, just weeks after his defeat, decided to take his own tour of Europe and the Middle East, some sort of odd procession of defeatist rhetoric from continent to continent that would be laughable if it wasn't so dangerous.
Two of their party's icons, Barbara Boxer and Ted Kennedy, accuse Pres. Bush of losing the war on terrorism, ignoring his many hard-fought victories and the brave valor of our men and women in the military, intelligence and law enforcement fields. All this while doing their best to sabotage and undermine the practically unimpeachable record of his nominee for Secretary Of State, who was forced to endure pretensious, untruthful rhetoric parroted by certain Democratic senators from the advance scenes of Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 sequel.
Many mumbled appreciation for the success of free and fair elections in Iraq, all while keeping up the too often empty, almost always twisted and convulted criticism of US efforts in Iraq just moments later. On not one but several key issues of human rights importance in the world, the party of human rights has stood silent in the face of evil, a damning indication that the party has lost not only its mind, but its heart and soul as well.
In regards to Iran, the focus is not on the continued suffering of the Iranian people and the need to fund and train Iranian democrats in the arts of electoral and legal revolution (as in Ukraine, Georgia and Ukraine), but on Pres. Bush's insistence on "threatening Iran unnecessarily", while questioning his competence and honesty in dealing with Iran's nuclear weapons aspirations. In reference to Syria, just repeat what is said about Iran but replace with chemical and biological weapons. In addressing Russia, the criticism is pointed less at Putin's toxic efforts to turn back democracy and freedom (as well as arming potential or current US enemies in China, Iran, Sudan and Syria), but on Pres. Bush's close relationship with Putin.
In defending Colombia against a drug-fueled insurgency, they engaged in defeatist talk that sounds informed but is nothing more than an arrogant dismissal of the ability of Latin Americans like Colombians to fight a just war and win it (Rep. David Obey D-Wisconsin "I think we have drifted little by little into a long-term sustained financial and political involvement with little expectation of real success"). Refreshingly, Obey and his fellow Democrats were off the mark considerably, Colombia's people have hope for the future more than ever before, with Pres. Uribe's successful leadership and fierce, victorious operations against drug traffickers, insurgents and terrorist groups leading to a drop in violence, kidnappings and a rise in economic and social fortunes for most Colombians.
In all these cases and more, one can sense a vile sense of jealousy and hatred of the President and his policies. It all comes down to the new foreign policy of the Democratic Party, the ANTI-Bush doctorine. Whatever Pres. Bush works towards, exploit it if possible but oppose it if it can be undermined and the media will play along. When Pres.Bush emphasizes strength and security, preach diplomacy and "respecting the feelings of other nations". When Pres. Bush claims anything, debunk and discredit if possible, regardless of the effect on military morale, intelligence preperation and vital diplomatic efforts. Whatever Pres. Bush does, indeed, question it and criticize it, whether it be tsunami aid or homeland security.
With a foreign policy agenda like this, the Democrats will accomplish two things (a), convince America they are unfit to lead at any point in the near future and (b) weaken America from within by destroying their party further and wiping out America's second party, as well as what were once credible voices and positions of opposition and oversight.
