Nonetheless, we need a government that is comprised of elected reps, who are there to legislate and govern. Your point is moot.
Yes, you're an employee/exploitee i.e. serf, selling (renting) your "labor power" (life-force, presence, time) to a capitalist. You're being reduced to a commodity in a "labor market" and purchased by capitalists. Your capitalist masters own everything, including the government.
In socialism, the people collectively, as a community, own the means of production and their government manages it for them. I would rather have my government, which holds elections, as my employer or "boss", than an unaccountable despot capitalist, who holds no elections. That's a no brainer.
In democratic socialism or council communism, the government is democratic and ruled by the people through their elected delegates. Under capitalism, the government is a plutocracy, ruled by big money interests or an absolute dictatorship, run like the capitalist workplace.
The capitalist workplace is indeed a form of slavery. Americans spend most of their waking hours in an absolute dictatorship, a totalitarian regime.
Your employer/exploiter master will fire you and you might end up homeless, living under a bridge. The capitalists kill people in their pursuit of profits, by starting wars to sell more weapons, keep people sick to sell more drugs, keep people poor to have access to cheap labor..etc. Capitalists have complete control over people's lives. When a working-class person goes to their 9 to 5 or 9 to 9, they're under a totalitarian regime, that can destroy their lives. If their employer fires them, they can end up homeless, without food, housing, healthcare..etc.
