A lot happened on that day. It was the first day of the Battle of Stones River aka Murfreesboro. About 130 miles west of Murfreesboro in Tennessee, the Battle of Parker's Crossroads happened on that day. Down in Texas, Confederate troops were staging in several locations for the Battle of Galveston. Some armed Confederate steamboats got underway that night. The battle began in the wee hours of the morning on January 1, 1863. Around 12:30am on December 31, 1862, the USS Monitor sank off Cape Hatteras with a loss of 16 sailors.

That was two weeks after the Battle of Fredericksburg.
