We weren't talking about many cases. We were talking about Paul Nungesser, who raped Emma Sulkowicz, a woman of color. (She's of Japanese, Chinese, and Jewish ancestry). The police refused to do anything about it. The University refused to do anything about it. She did a protest of carrying around the mattress she was raped on with her.

Instead of slinking back into a hole, Nungesser sued the University for his hurt feelings. And despite losing in court, the University paid him go-away money anyway.

Here's the thing, you are speculating as much as I am. Career prosecutors looked at this case, and figured that it wasn't one they wanted to go to trial on, given that getting the guy to just plead to the lesser offense was enough to get him deported and make him someone else's problem.
