Congress members write books, get paid for speeches, do consulting……..all of which gets reported on their taxes.
Joe Biden was one of the poorest members of the Senate. He did not start making money until he became VP
Yeah, but therein is the problem. Books don't tell the whole story.
Selling books doesn't account for the multi millions of dollars these people accrue. Most members of congress make a couple hundred thousand off of a book, at most.
Members of congress are allowed to only make just under $30,000 in side income, but there are exceptions to that. Those exceptions being book royalties, stock trades, and real estate deals. Now imagine that....seems awfully convenient, doesn't it?
Book sales: this is a way for members of congress to make money AND skirt campaign finance rules by allowing member of the public to "donate" via purchasing books. And, some of these members will make money off of their own campaigns by having the campaign purchase their books in bulk, in which they then sell from their campaigns website.
Stock trades: we already know the problems with this. Insider trading galore.
Real estate: again, like insider trading, this is another way for them to get wealthy, by knowing things about land due to their position in office, AND they can make money off of land purchased with public funds.
Take the light rail project in California, for example. Pelosi spent a lot of time steering billions of taxpayer dollars into land that Salesforce was going to sell. The ceo of Salesforce is a huge democrat donor and pelosis are among those who receive money from him.
Then there was the russell ranch issue where she was able to not disclose it due to house ruled not requiring them to disclose holdings of anything in subchapter S (I'm not 100% in this but it's what in recall)
Then there was the funneling of 200M to the presidio...just 6 blocks from the pelosis house.
And, i can't remember and trying to find the article, but a few weeks ago, i heard a story where apparently a member of congress used government money to purchase some land, then turned around and sold that land to a friend, who also used public money to make the purchase....I can't remember the details but, in trying to find that article again.
Then there is the feinstein postal service deal where the contract was awarded to a company affiliated with feinstens husband and they say that she had no influence WHATSOEVER on that deal....yeah...right.
ALL of this needs to be investigated and stopped. Book sales don't account for much of the wealth being made in Washington, most of it is these shady land and stock deals.
