In conspiracy theories, we assume that certain unknown individuals or cartels arrange events using subtle control. In network theory, we assume that control may not have an individual origin, but goes around using connections of the network.

Is there a way to device a test to tell these apart? To distinguish whether an element of control over a group of people is from a hidden individual/cartel or is from a network effect of a chain of consequences of one thing leading to another?

So, what if there are watchers for real? And what if they use the network nature of economy and life in general to pervert evolution and replace you with what they want to select?

The higher the technology, the more centralized the network of control gets, and the stronger the selection applies to you. Is the ww2 entente and the nationalists/socialists at the forefront of converting the human species to something new, using this network control and selection of survivors?

Power is exerted, and is based on common interests. You need to take an advanced class in interest group theory.

Sometimes there are real conspiracies, but more often than not, compartmentalization reduces any knowledge or understanding of how these individual choices, in complex systems are operating, even to those who are part of them.
