Over the past decade, a health gap has emerged in the United States. While extensive research has examined how factors like income and education shape health outcomes, political ideology has largely been overlooked—until now.

A paper published last month analyzed individual health data from a long-term study of a large, representative sample of Americans across all 50 states.

“2010 is the last year in which we can say fairly clearly that there is not this gap,” Elizabeth Elder, a coauthor of the study, tells Fast Company. “By 2020 we have pretty clear evidence of a gap in which conservatives are less healthy than liberals.”

By 2016, the gap had begun to appear in biomarker measures. By 2020, it was showing up in deaths from causes such as heart disease, cancer, and stroke. Since then, the gap has only widened. Between 2020 and 2022, only 0.2% of “very liberal” respondents died of internal causes, compared with 1.34% of “very conservative” respondents.

I have absolutely no problem with science, love to hear about new theories and innovations. The problem I have is when you idiot's repeat some garbage about "The science is settled" That's not how scientific method works. Even Einstein was wrong about several thing.

As far as vaccines and medicines I have no issue with those either unless their is a political motivation behind them. The problem is the time line. In the US new drugs take up to 10 years from conception to approval by the FDA. The COVID vaccine skipped that process. I wonder how many politicians bought stock in companies making the COVID vaccines.

The FDA process is one of the toughest in the world: lab testing, toxicology, controlled human trials, manufacturing review, adverse-event monitoring, and the ability to pull or relabel drugs after approval. You can argue about speed or bureaucracy, but not that the U.S. lacks sophisticated safety testing.

We know mRNA vaccines are safe because they have been administered billions of times and undergo rigorous, continuous monitoring by health agencies like the FDA and the CDC. Clinical trial participants…representing tens of thousands of people across diverse demographics…must show excellent safety records before any vaccine is authorized or approved.

The COVID vaccines moved fast mostly because the government removed financial and bureaucratic delays, not because the basic safety steps were skipped. Companies could run steps in parallel, manufacture doses before final approval, enroll trials quickly because COVID was widespread, and regulators reviewed data in real time instead of waiting for one giant final packet.

Research tells us that liberals live longer and conservatives live happier more contented lives.

So I guess the choice is do you want quantity or quality?

Interesting question to say the least.

I don't know how a shorter, unhealthier life is happier. It's hard to reconcile these "happiness" surveys with reality. Especially when the paper you're quoting comes from a far right think tank.

I find the idea of living a short, unhealthy life to be the antithesis of "happiness". Nothing induces unhappiness more than poor health.

Given that conservatives are far more religious than leftists, I am reminded that religion is the opiate of the masses. People are brainwashed into thinking that suffering on earth will ensure their place in heaven. This is how the Church kept the peasants in line in the middle ages - by convincing them that their suffering on earth would be rewarded in heaven, if they lived good lives.

Conservatives are happier because they live in a fantasy world where everything is fine and they're fine, and there are no problems to solve.
