Carter green lit the "smart bomb" research which gave the USA the weapons to win the Gulf war. And his policies tamed inflation. But he was weak on foreign policy.

Reagan is the guy who began the transfer of wealth from the working and middle class to the top 10% of Americans, which has impoverished working and middle class Americans and lead to the inequality and economic hardships Americans are currently facing.

To his credit, even Reagan admitted he fucked up badly, and raised taxes at the end of his presidency, but successive Republican presidents have repeated his mistake of cutting taxes to the rich and impoverishing everyone else.

Over the past decade, a health gap has emerged in the United States. While extensive research has examined how factors like income and education shape health outcomes, political ideology has largely been overlooked—until now.

A paper published last month analyzed individual health data from a long-term study of a large, representative sample of Americans across all 50 states.

“2010 is the last year in which we can say fairly clearly that there is not this gap,” Elizabeth Elder, a coauthor of the study, tells Fast Company. “By 2020 we have pretty clear evidence of a gap in which conservatives are less healthy than liberals.”

By 2016, the gap had begun to appear in biomarker measures. By 2020, it was showing up in deaths from causes such as heart disease, cancer, and stroke. Since then, the gap has only widened. Between 2020 and 2022, only 0.2% of “very liberal” respondents died of internal causes, compared with 1.34% of “very conservative” respondents.

The above puts me in mind of a comment made by a comedian many years ago when the hobby of "tombstoning" took off. I assume that term is understood? It refers to people, usually young and often for a dare or when inebriated, leap into water from higher points, quarry edges, cliffs, bridges etc.

Carter created the Iran problem, the worst S&L bank failure in history, stagflation wrecked the economy, inflation surged, cut defense to dangerous low levels, passed the Community Reinvestment Act which caused the mortgage recession when Bush was in office. Reagan cut taxes send money back to the states and rebuilt dense resulting in the fall if the USSR. TEFRA cut tax rates and reduced many deductibles resulting in 10 years of GDP growth.
