Now, I don't consider myself liberal or conservative. I'm a libertarian when I'm in a wishful thinking type mood, and a Trump-supporting American firster when I face the real world. But I have gone through phases of being liberal and being conservative. I was once exactly the type pessimist that typifies the liberals I know.

I did take notice of Republicans not getting mental health needs met. This is likely due to the fact that mental health treatement costs money and leaves a record which might be discovered by an employer. This may cause Reps to hesitate or decide not to seek treatment and then say on an anonymous poll that they have unmet needs.

Liberals are not likely to be concerned about those factors, being less interested in employment and most often having some sort of government provided healthcare that fully pays for their shrinks and meds.

Other than that, I think the reason for the disparity in mental illness frequency is pretty obvious.

I will suggest that more liberals live in large cities which usually means higher costs for rent and food, more crime and stress of being in traffic all day, less "warmth" among citizens etc.

Beyond that, having Trump in power and/or unfairly boxing external factors rather than ones personal talent and sacrifices to succeed leaves people feeling helpless, whether warranted or not.

Take it from me, a legitimate victim of this helplessness which is most damaging as my entire life I have had a very strong, almost extreme internal locus of control only to be snookered by the state.

If this helplessness were unfounded it would certainly lead to unhappiness.

First of all you have to be a miserable person to be a liberal. You don’t even have to be miserable yourself they can be miserable for other people they don’t even know. Somewhere somehow they can always find someone to make them feel bad. They look for them.

Conservatives on the other hand look for ways to be happy. If shits not going just right look for the good parts.

The OP says "self reported". The actual studies of liberals and conservatives show no meaningful difference. When asked conservatives lie their ass off or are unaware of their issues. How can I prove that? Easily, there are lots of studies that show no difference.

A Johns Hopkins-linked 2024 analysis found that screening positive for depression did not differ significantly between Republicans and Democrats in 2023.
