Stephen Colbert’s Late Show has been leading the late-night pack in ratings—but it’s also heading for the exit.


Ratings Snapshot (Q2 2025)

• Average viewership: 2.42 million across 41 first-run episodes
• 18–49 demographic: 219,000 viewers, just behind Jimmy Kimmel’s 220,000
• Trend: Colbert’s show was the only one to grow its audience quarter-over-quarter (+1%)

Despite this strong performance, CBS announced on July 17 that The Late Show will end in May 2026, with no replacement host planned. The network cited financial reasons, not ratings or content, as the cause—though the timing has sparked speculation, especially after Colbert criticized CBS’s parent company over a controversial settlement with Donald Trump.
