Most of the debt was money Congress took from the Social Security fund. They made it legal for them to take whatever was left over and spend it on anything they want. Like spending trillions on Obamacare. Obama took $700 billion from the Medicare fund to start Obamacare, then he cut benefits. States had a choice; Sign on to Obamacare or expand Medicare. Then Obama brought in hundreds of thousands of refugees and he is using intra governmental funds (social security and medicare) to pay for their benefits. Illegal immigration costs us $161 billion annually. Social Security and Medicare take up roughly $2 trillion of the budget. That's close to half of the total budget. Defense is only 16%. Yet Congress keep stealing from the fund and keeps driving up the national debt, not with Defense spending but with their pet projects and earmarks.
