the Albigenses aka Catharists were a 12th century gnostic Christian sect, that the Catholics exterminated for their money and influence. But what made so many people join them to begin with? Because they had all the Christian books, not only the ones that the conclave of Nicea sanctioned into the bible.
The Albigenses were able to answer questions about the well observable rebirth of humans too. This the Catholics can't fathom, but even the Catholics agree to this day, that it is true, that the root cause of some illnesses most notably the mental illnesses lie in the fact, that the person was physically born, but his soul is still in purgatory. So how is this possible? Wouldn't people go to hell and purgatory after and not before their lives? Let's discover this fact a little more in detail.
The Albigenses found out, that like Buddha said, you can't think of God first before you think the question of why there is suffering at least generally. Even the book of Romans 20(?) tries to address this by describing that the whole universe is subjected to suffering in order to bring it to the light of ethereal life.
Thereby now, both the Buddha and Jesus Christ are talking about the same thing. By finding enlightenment, described by the Buddha, and personally demonstrated by Jesus Christ, you break your cycles of death and rebirth, and instead you join the place of eternal life.
In this sense, the Judeo Christian idea of hell with the purifying fire is the temporary stage that connects your death with your rebirth.
