If this was on American TV..
Scratch that, it would never get on TV in the West.

The makers of what several news organizations described as among the most blatantly racist advertisements in recent memory have apologized, in a fashion.

Qiaobi Laundry Gell Balls said in a statement released over the weekend it was sorry for the harm caused by the advertisement, which features a paint-spattered black man being transformed into a clean-cut Asian man by means of a washing machine. The company denied, however, that there was any racist intent behind the ad and cautioned viewers not to “read too much into it.”

The ad has accumulated close to eight million views on YouTube since reports by Shanghaiist and BuzzFeed brought it to the attention of the English-speaking Internet late last week. The controversy also drew attention to the ad inside China, where it had been largely ignored since being released in March, sparking debate about what constitutes racism.

Asked about the ad at a regular news briefing on Monday, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said “an isolated and inappropriate act by a commercial company” had been exaggerated and that China has been working to eliminate racial discrimination.
