1) The Vietnamese completely rejected our puppet rulers and supported the Communists. Period.
2) We couldn't escalate the conflict by invading North Vietnam without bringing Russia and China into the war.
3) The people we supported were notoriously corrupt, stealing much of the aid we put in.

Worth adding is that the chinese have also been aiding Russia in its battle to take Ukraine and last I checked, Russia still wasn't going much of anywhere there.
