China Can Wipe Out US Forces In Asia If War Breaks Out, Says Report

Australian researchers have issued a new report claiming that China’s hi-tech ballistic missiles could cripple U.S. military bases and naval forces within hours if an armed conflict erupted in the Western Pacific between the two superpowers.

The 104-page report was published by the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney where they analyzed the U.S. military strategy and spending as well as alliances in the area.

The report merits some scrutiny as even some Chinese military experts still believe that the United States is the superior power in the region as evidenced by the USS Ronald Reagan, a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered supercarrier, and it’s entourage docked in the Philippines and the powerful Seventh Fleet based in Japan

The report accurately states that China is making rapid technological advancements. China is also expected to commission its second aircraft carrier, a yet-to-be-named type 001A nuclear carrier, soon. The U.S. fleet has 11 nuclear powered carriers so the prospect of China overpassing the United States for military supremacy is remote.

South China Sea and other Asian waters.

The lead author of the report, Ashley Townshend, told This Week in Asia about China, “As its power rises, it may well be emboldened to make a play for parts of the first island chain, including Taiwan, which would seriously constrain the security horizons for all concerned.” The statement was in reference to island chains that stretch from the Japanese archipelago to Borneo.

The strongest point in the report is focused on the capabilities of China’s Rocket Force that could be deployed by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). The PLA is armed with a vast array of missiles including:

  • An estimated 1,500 short-range ballistic missiles.
  • 450 medium-range missiles
  • 160 intermediate-range missiles
  • Hundreds of long-range ground-launched cruise missiles.
  • Some missiles described as “carrier killers,” such as the DF-21D, with a range of up to 1,500 kms.
These are all conventional ballistic missiles able to make precision strikes on Singapore and other large American interests in South Korea and Japan. The Australian think tank report points out that China could deploy the missiles in a surprise attack in the hours before U.S. reinforcements could arrive, giving China a huge advantage at the start of any battle.

The writer lost any credibility when he labeled China a "super power"...

That's what Japan believed in 1941... turns out, they were being a tad overly optimistic.

A little reality check, kids: The USA won bigly in 1945, but have lost every damn war we've got into since.
Korea
Vietnam
Iraq
Afghanistan
Total clusterfucks, all!
China is a super-power, the USA is a geriatric wannabe.

We don´t need a 104 page report to know that missiles can fly. More interesting is that in China, the rocket guys form an own military branch.

People seem to forget that nukes exist

Good point, but there is a likelyhood that wars that will be limited wont end up in the use of nukes. (limited war over Taiwan for example, if the US would stop China from a military takeover of the island)

One clue that this isn't the case is that they haven't done that, and haven't even tried to. They would if they could, and they will the second they think they can. It also shows the importance of those forward bases, as they have to be taken out first, before any attacks on our home states, while we don't have to wait until we take out their forward bases.

The details of the report are unimportant. The report is, after all, speculation by someone who couldn't possibly be privy to all the facts or different scenarios by which the US and China could engage in war.

What is much more interesting about the thread is, seeing who is openly gleeful at the prospect of China destroying the US in a war.

That says much more about them than the report says about the capability of the Chinese military.

China is a super-power, the USA is a geriatric wannabe.

We lost' nothing. The Soviet Union Collapsed in 1973, bankrupted by their own imperialism and our opposition to expansions around the world, Korea drove a wedge between Red China and the Soviets that has never healed, Viet Nam bankrupted the Soviets and they could never exploit the fall of the South after Congress stabbed them in the back and abandoned them to the northern invasion, Iraq isn't a threat any more and Afghanistan isn't a Russian satellite and no longer a threat to its neighbors either much less a target for occupation by any of them. China is not a 'super power', it is a dependency of multinational pirates and labor racketeers; without their business and U.S. subsidies it falls back to 1950's stagnation with no markets for its only saleable resource, slave labor; while that is all great for Wall Street, it's a short term bubble that eventually eats itself as its markets decline due to falling disposable incomes, created by its own cheap labor and the outsourcing that creates in its major markets, that 'race to the bottom' thing most rightwingers think is so grand, until it dawns on them who is next in line for The DarwinismTreatment, then all of a sudden they reverse their opinions, mostly after it's too late and their 30 year old kids are still living at home.

Whether they can or not is one issue. For me the broader issue is their economic might. This is a reminder for Americans to ignore the yelling from elite media who say "don't get in trade war with China" as they fully intend to see China replace America as the global super power. Instead, confront the Commies aggressively and impact their economic power. If they can be hurt, their ability to expand militarily, their spying stealing etc will be impacted,

This is all about National Security. The next generation has a big fight on their hands, Trump is the only one who seems to understand what's at stake

Korean War was a win--the mission was to eject the NKs from the south
PG1 was a win
you are ignorant of wars/military /etc
most wars do not end in unconditional surrender/etc

Yeah the US government isn’t spending enough on war. We need to grow the war budget because of those nasty scary Chinese.

LOL.

That's what Japan believed in 1941... turns out, they were being a tad overly optimistic.

Japan had more Carriers than we did from the start until 1943. Japan had better fighters, pilots, and their Soldiers were superior in training and experience. Where they failed was construction capabilities and logistics. Today, it would take ten years to repeat what we did in 1942.

We would have to do so without the high tech toys we love. Most of the components are made in China, and I have to think trade would be suspended during any hostilities. So the smart bombs and computer controlled doohickey’s we depend on would run out.

This is why you NEED domestic manufacturing of these items. You don't want to be dependent on any nation for your resources or production of anything.

As much as Tim Cook says the tariffs hurt him, and they might; he should do more innovating in America. Considering the premium prices he charges, he sure as hell should be!

Sure makes you wonder where all that money the Department of Defense gets goes. You can ask Pentagon, but they don't really know either.

It kind of reminds me of how the US became a superpower, the US started as an economic powerhouse and only later became a military powerhouse when WWII forced its hand to do it. Only difference is that the US was also a democratic, capitalist superpower just as its predecessor "the British Empire" was.

What is worrying me also is the parallel institutions China is setting up China Creates a World Bank of Its Own, and the U.S. Balks

I wouldn’t say gleeful. Our Navy is seriously in the grips of a Multiple Personality Disorder. The Zumwalt Destroyers for example. The USS Zumwalt Can't Fire Its Guns Because the Ammo Is Too Expensive

Stealth, as if that is a real thing, and they can’t shoot because the ammo is $800k a shot. So the big advancement that the ship was built around is a White Elephant. In the meantime they have decommissioned all the Frigates because they need bigger ships. While also commissioning Littoral Combat ships because big ships can’t get close to shore.

Now the Navy wants to buy Frigates. Because it turns out they need them after all.

The U.S. Navy’s Newest Frigate Can’t Carry Enough Missiles

If their war plans are anything like their ship plans, we are screwed.
