On a local talk radio show, the host questioned a scientist from New York who seemed to truly know his shit. He said some disturbing things, for example, that we couldn't expect a generally-effective vaccine for at least four years, but his thoughts on masks were instructive, namely,

1. Unless you are wearing a SERIOUS mask - one that has adhesive around the edges, thus preventing any air from getting in around it - your mask is more window-dressing than an effective disease-fighting tool;
2. Air circulation is more significant than a mask. Wearing a mask outdoors is, according to him, basically pointless unless you are going to be in a mosh pit, or something similar. Don't bother with a mask outdoors; just keep your distance.
3. Indoors, however, the risk of passing a communicable disease goes up dramatically - more so if there is not good ventilation. We should ABSOLUTELY wear masks indoors, even if the mask is not perfect. The distancing in restaurants should be seriously followed.
4. The idea that wearing masks outdoors for 90 days would do any significant good is fairly ridiculous.

And as with every other credible scientist, he believes there is no reason to keep schools closed down. Kids are in essentially no danger; the focus has to be on older and compromised folks with whom the kids might come into contact. Grand-parental contact might have to be eliminated once the kids go back, and other arrangements would have to be made for elderly in the same household. But even extreme measures in that regard don't justify keeping kids out of school for a year.
