They're smashing the locking mechanism where the cable locks into the car with hammers. So you get a damaged charge point on your car and no cable. Thieves get more money selling them on likes of eBay as opposed to scrap value. Someone buying a cable because they've had theirs stolen are more than likely buying a stolen cable.
