Can Trump Shutter the Department of Education?

I disagree there is no federal input....
Well, are you the teacher? I was and can tell you the feds have no input on curriculum. My state in Florida had a designated curriculum and in Kentucky, individual districts or schools created the curriculum. In several districts, I wrote my own. All it has to do is allow the students to meet whatever standards are used.

I coach the golf team... I spend 4 to 6 hours around teachers everyday... you haven't been in a classroom for some time I presume....
Its a new world.... knowing you.... you would quit in one day....

Quite the list this dude made up.

This one is a great one:

11. Very few experienced teachers who’ve taught in the trenches were consulted in establishing these standards.

Same applies here on this message board.

We have so-called self proclaimed experts that have NEVER spent a day in the Public School, but someone they are experts.
Mostof us spent years in the public school system.

I taught for 21 years, 2 of which were as a high school administrator. Things have no changed that much. I have three grandchildren in high school here locally and in my former county. I still communicate with a lot of my colleagues who are still teaching. I also follow numerous education websites, just like I do military pages. I am current on most issues.

When did you retire?...

When did you retire?...
I left teaching in KY in 2018. I retired from working in 2022. I had been working for the US Army as a contractor for 4 years when I got sick and had to quit work.

I retired from Florida when I left my administrator position in 2006 and moved to KY to take care of my mother.

Certainly, Congress budgets money for the Dept of Ed, but if the legitimate functions are simply picked up by other departments, can Congress intervene.

I call your attention to the following excerpt from the story:

"According to the fact sheet, the order also aims to ensure that, throughout the process, there is no disruption in the delivery of services, programs, and benefits that Americans rely on."

It is an absolute certainty that some "education" advocacy group will file suit in a Federal District in a Leftist part of the country, but how will it play out? It's basically a matter of "You made some money available to me, and I saw no need to spend it."?
Not without congressional legislation . S.210- 96th congress (1979-1980) established the Dept. Education, defined it's purpose and responsibilities. The law also establishes the various sections within the Dept; (1) Elementary and Secondary Education; (2) Postsecondary Education; (3) Vocational and Adult Education; (4) Special Education and Rehabilitative services; (5) Educational Research and Improvement; and (6) Civil Rights.

When Donald signs an order abolishing the DOE, he is acting in direct violation of the law, his oath of office and thus the constitution which he has sworn to preserve, protect, and defend.

It will take a federal judge about 5 mins to nullify Trump's order which will be upheld by a court of appeals. SCOTUS will refuse to waste their time hearing the case.

Congress taking a department under the legal preview of the president is unconstitutional.

Your people talk like you have a mouth full of marbles sometimes and we need a translator.

Robin Williams once joked that race driver Jackie Stewart was the only man who spoke English that still needed a translator!
You talk as though your mouth is full of cocks....oh

Get English sorted and the word maths. Be a good boy, son.

Yes, I do. I stay current by talking to my friends and keeping current on my various teacher Facebook pages and websites. I'll bet you don't do that!
When I was in High School the Dept. of education was created... I know education was better back then... its only gone downhill... teachers still complain about having to buy paper pens and pencils and glue.... the dept. of education was suppose to fix that....

I worked for a School District in the State of Florida and was a consultant to the state DOE. Unless things have changed drastically, teachers do not create their own curriculum. Standards and curriculum are developed by the DOE. Teachers have wide latitude in presentation but goals are set down by the DOE.

No. That is your school district's problem, and they are funded mostly by your property taxes. That shows how incomplete your knowledge of education truly is. Don't feel badly, I was the same way until I saw it from the inside and reflected back on my own education.

I graduated high school in 1978. Education was NOT better back then. There was no such thing as AP courses or honors courses in my high school. In contrast, when my youngest graduated from high school, half her freshman college courses were already done. She qualified for a full scholarship right out of school, whereas I had to wait a year and prove myself in the Navy. I know my two older kids got an outstanding education because they attended the high school where I taught. I handed each of them their high school diploma.

we would be much better off replacing the piece of Sh*** with something else more streamlined, efficient and focused on raising standards of learning. All something the DOE has been given every chance to do for decades. Instead they have brought harm on children.
If we were really serious about improving education in American we would centralize control of it as many countries have done that out perform the US. In this country our educational system is is controlled by 13,000 school boards staffed by 85,000 members of the community, most which have little knowledge of educational systems. Many are using it as a stepping stone to higher elected office. School Board members answer to voters not to parents or educators.
