âWe Donât Have to Sign Dealsâ: Trump Backs Off Big Promises About Tariffs
After weeks of bragging about upcoming trade âdealsâ with foreign countries, President Trump says the United States doesnât need to worry about them after all.Ever since President Trump announced he was slapping hefty tariffs on countries across the globe, he has been predicting they would force trading partners to sign major deals beneficial to the United States.
But on Tuesday, with the Canadian prime minister sitting beside him in the Oval Office and no new trade deal between the two countries achieved, Mr. Trump had a different message for the public: âWe donât have to sign deals.â
âEveryone says âWhen, when, when are you going to sign deals?ââ Mr. Trump said, at one point motioning toward Howard Lutnick, the commerce secretary. âWe donât have to sign deals. We could sign 25 deals right now, Howard, if we wanted to. We donât have to sign deals. They have to sign deals with us. They want our market. We donât want a piece of their market. We donât care about their market.â
When very little progress is being made on tariff deals, over 5M people protested your failing presidency all around the country, the BBB is proving difficult to pass, court orders are blocking your illegal agenda, and your poll numbers are in the tank, what's a wannabe autocrat to do?
From AI......."What does it mean to Wag the Dog?
Wag the dog is a political term for the act of creating a diversion from a damaging issue usually through military force. It stems from the generic use of the term to mean a small and seemingly unimportant entity (the tail) controls a bigger, more important one (the dog)."
