Police say officers trying to arrest one man on gun charges in Mattapan surrounded by unruly crowd; wind up arresting seven people, seizing seven guns

Boston Police report officers arrested seven people and seizing seven guns at Elizabeth and Astoria streets in Mattapan last night after gang-unit officers arrived there last night in search of one Brockton man they believed was in possession of a gun.

By the time the area was cleared out, police had called in backup officers from across the city and shut Norfolk Street between Morton and Babson streets to try to restore order.

Police say gang-unit officers arrived at 17 Elizabeth St. around 6:15 p.m. looking for Tyshawn Cater, 20, of Brockton, who they say tried to run away after tossing a gun into a parked car. Police say officers quickly nabbed him and the gun. But then:

As the officers attempted to secure the suspect for transport, a large and unruly crowd began to gather around the arresting officers. Citywide units were called to help secure the scene at which time, six other firearms were located in the immediate area leading to the arrest of three more adult male suspects on firearm related charges. Three other adult male suspects on scene were placed in custody on charges of Assault and Battery on a Police Officer.
Police say all the seized guns were loaded, with between 5 and 29 bullets in them.

Arrested:

  • Tyshawn Carter, 20, of Brockton for unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. Per the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, ordered held pending a dangerousness hearing on Friday. He has a prior gun conviction.
  • Devante M. Cheshire, 27, of Stoughton, for unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, possession of a high-capacity feeding device, possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number and possession of Class A drugs. Per the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, ordered held pending a dangerousness hearing on Friday.
  • Darnell Pierre, 31, of Mattapan for unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. Per the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, ordered held pending a dangerousness hearing on Friday.
  • Sabastian Fernandes-Monteiro, 20, of Dorchester, for unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. Per the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, ordered held pending a dangerousness hearing on Friday.
  • Tiana A. Grant-James, 26, of Dorchester, for assault and battery on a police officer and disorderly conduct.
  • Akyla Palmer, 34, of Mattapan, for assault and battery on a police officer and disorderly conduct.
  • Giovanni Coley, 35, of Mattapan, for assault and battery on a police officer and disorderly conduct.
This is why Boston is on par with most Blue-run cities of the same size.....They have not neutered their PD.....At least not yet.....Fuck around in Boston and find out.

James, Palmer, and Coley are lucky to be alive. Ordinarily, you attack a police officer, you get shot. They should have been.

Sadly, they'll all be out before the weekend in all likelihood.

If that were true we'd probably have at least 100x more police shootings annually.

Cops get in a whole lot of scraps without shooting the suspect.

Why were the cops trying to confiscate their guns in the first place?

No pictures of the arrestees here. If they were black youths, I hope the police officers involved know how to do some other line of work. The "community" will not stand to have their sacred cows disrespected in this way.

Weren't there honkies they could have bee hassling instead?

Can you cite the clause in the 2nd amendment that says dopers/gang members have no right to keep and bear arms?
They lose that right with the first felony conviction or conviction for domestic abuse.

It's also illegal in NY to carry without a permit and license.

The 2nd amendment does not say that the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed unless they do not buy a permit and license.

That's simply not what it says. The bold part simply doesn't exist.
