The monument has nothing to do with the ‘confederacy,’ nothing to do with the Civil War, and nothing to do with ‘honoring’ those who fought in the war.

The monument was created in 1902, 37 years after the end of the War, not to ‘commemorate’ anything or anyone – rather, it was created to intimidate and terrorize black Americans by codifying Jim Crow, black codes, and segregation.

It’s a monument to fear, ignorance, racism, and hate.

Only a small minority of folks of European-descent have any connection to the Confederacy or any positive feelings for it, or have any reason to want it honored in the middle of a city.
