Bird feeders

A Red Bellied Woodpecker paid a visit this morning:

I might have posted this already.

I rescued this hummer from the net around my dwarf cherry tree and recognized that it was in this state of shock, called "torpor", so I placed it on the stone wall, out of the reach of the dog, to give it a chance to recover.

Meanwhile I went and got my camera, hoping to get this photo. She recovered and flew away just a few seconds after I got this photo.

I have since learned that many birds do this when they get stressed out, like when they fly into the window. If you leave the bird in a safe place, it will recover and fly away.

I don't mind feeding the occasional squirrel who braves my golden doodle. The dominant birds are blue jays but cardnals hold their own.

We tend to forget that birds need water the same as we do. When the world is full of ice and there is no standing water don't forget to put out a pan of warm water with the seed.

Thank you! I do think about putting out warm water for mammals but forgot about the birds. With temps going well below zero, it will be a habit to get into, but I love my birds. I can just put hot water into their currently frozen birdbath.

whitehall, I was at the wild bird supplies store today and bought a little water heater made especially for a bird bath, along the lines of a stock tank heater, after your suggestion, and will have it set up shortly. My birds said to tell you, "Thank you!"

really- i wanted to try one. maybe they have flowers.
I've had a few buzz me- look me in the face- and helicopter off. very cute birds.

i have a few that come every year - i can recognize them individually... try mimicking their chatter, it fascinates them & they are friendly little things.

this pic, i managed to take when i was sitting right under her & we had a conversation as she had some nectar.

is putting a feeder worth it? do they come to it?

it is - if you can put up some shiny/red decorations around, that will also attract them. funnel shaped flowers is what they also like.

we rarely get below zero - but i use a ' solar sipper ' - which will keep water unfrozen down to 20 degrees. no electricity/cords needed.

my feeders on the ground are protected - i have a few feeders hanging on the clothesline & clothespins usually work for those brave enough to make a jump... they get tangled up & flip off. those that are real acrobats & get to the feeders, meet up with my BB gun.

Wow! I wish I had seen that before I paid $80 for the heater I bought! There's not much winter sun in the place where I have the bird bath mounted.

Looks like they aren't able to poop inside, unlike my bird bath. That'd be cool.

Edit -- I just re-read your post and realized it wouldn't work well here. We are well under 0° for long stretches in the winter. Rats.
