Bill Gates: Business's need to stay closed for 6 to 10 weeks!

My biz won't exist if i sit on my a** for a month

Nor will most my peers

Owners don't get to stand in the Unemp line, crumbs from the Gub'Mit won't keep us afloat, SBA loans are a predatory joke, and the taxman is still beating on our doors

and quite frankly i'm tired of public officials (all of whom get a free pass) telling the private sector (none of which do) to lockdown

maybe if we had actual leaders who were in our shoes, they'd understand

~S~

I wonder what you would have said during World War II when the population was drafted to serve the war effort(both into service in the military as well as service in factories to make tanks, planes, and other weapons of war) and civilians at home at to deal with severe rationing.

In WWII, you could have pilots trained in a few months. Today it takes years.

I read that some modestly wealthy basketball star put his money where his mouth is and donated a couple of million to his home state Louisiana to combat the epidemic. I don't begrudge Gates how he spends his 100 billion dollar fortune on his car collection or his real estate empire but I don't see him doing anything except whining.

Bill Gates said the US missed its chance to avoid a coronavirus shutdown and recommended businesses stay closed for 6 to 10 weeks

  • Bill Gates said the US missed its chance to contain COVID-19 without mandatory shutdowns, according to CNBC.
  • "We did not act fast enough to have an ability to avoid the shutdown," Gates said during a Ted Connects virtual event Tuesday.
  • While admitting the "disastrous" economic impact, according to CNBC, Gates reiterated his previous suggestion that the shutdown should last six to 10 weeks.

America has missed its chance to contain the coronavirus without mandatory shutdowns, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said in an interview Tuesday, according to CNBC.

"The US is past this opportunity to control (COVID-19) without shutdown," Gates said during a virtual TED Connects event, CNBC reported. "We did not act fast enough to have an ability to avoid the shutdown," Gates added.

The US has become the third-worst-hit country in the world, with nearly 600 deaths and nearly 50,000 confirmed cases reported across all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and at least three US territories.

Those numbers, however, are likely to climb as the US continues to ramp up its testing efforts — which have been woefully behind those of other countries.

"In terms of testing, we're still not creating that capacity and applying it to people in need," Gates said, according to CNBC, reaffirming earlier comments Gates made about testing in the US not being organized enough.

More state and local governments have begun telling residents to remain in their homes in recent weeks, with one in three Americans now under "stay at home" orders. But Gates said the time to take such measures was back in January, according to CNBC.

Gates also said that, despite a potentially "disastrous" impact on the economy, the shutdowns should last for six to 10 weeks, CNBC reported. That timeline echoes Gates' previous comments about the steps other countries should take to contain the virus.

On Monday, President Trump went on a Twitter spree urging the US economy to go back to business as usual within 15 days, despite most public health experts — including Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of the top officials on the Trump administration's coronavirus task force — advising against lifting the containment measures to reopen the economy, predicting that the outbreak could last for several months.

There you have it, Bill Gates, a real Billionaire unlike Trump, understands the SCIENCE and understands Trump failed in January which has produced a mess where we need to be shut down for an extended period of time.
FO, Twit. Bill Gates is A). No more a "real" billionaire than Trump. They both have billions. B). Gates is no more a scientist than Trump. He's simply spewing what YOU want to hear. This country has already been largely in lockdown for two weeks. Here is an excerpt from actual scientists from Stanford who state the viability of Covid in terms of hours and days. Do tell me why we need to destroy the country in a total shutdown lasting 1/5th a year in light of this data?

World War II did not destroy the country and neither will locking things down for 2 months or 2 years if necessary. The government took 16 million men and women out of the economy in World War II and sent them overseas. Easily 33% of the entire workforce at the time. Civilians at home had to deal with rationing of goods and services. Everything was dedicated to the war effort. The United States needs the same approach now to defeat this Pathogen, more healthcare workers, medical supplies, and people staying HOME if their not involved in a ESSENTIAL BUSINESS, because the PATHOGEN is looking for host to help spread the disease everywhere. So people staying HOME is part of how we will win this war against this PATHOGEN!
WOW. What a card. Shutdown/lockdown the entire country for TWO YEARS?! No problem, right, Ace?! WWII DID THE EXACT OPPOSITE, Spud: it supercharged the manufacturing in this country and put every last person available to work. Not to mention their being able to lead lives not prisoner of their homes. Gee, I hope all your half-crocked theories aren't so full of holes.

16 million people were taken away from their jobs and sent overseas engaged in a (non-productive from an economic standpoint) pursuit for several years. This time, were just asking people to stay at home for a few months instead of going overseas to blow stuff up. The people at home are going to get money from the government, just as they did when they went overseas to be engaged in combat in World War II.

As we speak right now, Business's are being converted to produce medical supplies just as business's were converted to produce tanks, planes, guns, bullets in World War II.

Again, 16 million men were taken away from jobs and business's and sent overseas to fight in a war. That was probably 1/3 of the workforce in 1940, taken away, and sent overseas.

Sorry, but there are plenty of good analogies. Plenty of business's that were non-essential to the war effort during World War II were forced to close down for years or were converted to the production of military supplies. In today's crises, their producing medical supplies instead of military supplies.

Do you not understand the difference in training someone to rivet an airplane's wings and getting a 5 and 6 year degree in nursing?

Not everyone is being asked to become a nurse, and a lot of people on the nursing staff don't have training anywhere near that level.

In this crises, were asking millions of people to STAY HOME, instead of storming a beach half way across the world.

Businesses need to open now. This liberal Democrat social distancing BS is killing us.

Tell that to Doctors and Nurses in New York City right now. At some Hospitals, all the beds are full, and you only get a bed when the person in the bed prior to you has died. You'll see this repeated in cities throughout the country if you open non-essential business's and stop social distancing.

Bullshit. Where is this link to your fantasy?

I heard it on MSNBC the day before. Don't worry, plenty of reports with links will be coming in the next few weeks reporting on the HELL patients and medical staff are going through in New York City. Then you can tell us all, why you think its just a fantasy.

You don't open ANY non-essential business, until the daily rate of infection is cut well below 10%. Right now the United States is growing at 20% to 30% a day in terms of number of infections. You need to get that number below 1% really before you start opening things back up. Otherwise opening things back up just gives the PATHOGEN lots of new hosts to spread to and will force things to go back into lock down again and make the lockdown last FAR LONGER than it normally would.

You can open up non-essential business's when CONDITIONS on the ground allow for it. You don't set some arbitrary time table to simply open things up. It has to be conditions based.

This is a global emergency. Defeating the pathogen is the top priority. The economy can come later once the pathogen is defeated. That's why every government on the planet is following the lock down procedures despite whatever damage it does to the economy. The goal right now is staying healthy and alive. You don't assume business as usual during a hurricane or tornado. You shelter in place until the danger is over and then you pick up the pieces.

You can repair economic damage. There will be less economic damage if the United States stays locked down until the level of active cases has been reduced significantly to a level where contact tracing can contain it. Otherwise, opening non-essential services too soon will simply lead to another lock down and for a more extensive period.

At a 27% growth rate per day, 85,000 cases on March 26, 2020 would become nearly 5,000,000 cases by April 12, 2020 which is Easter Sunday. You need to get the growth rate well below 1% before you even think of re-opening non-essential business.

In WWII, my Dad and his brother were both in the military. His sisters were working the farm or industries related to the war effort. Before they met, my mother made uniforms. They had "INCOME".

What is you answer to that?
