Clearly, he does not want the U.S. to leave NATO. Then he would only be the head of the Gaylords of Europe who have shown little interest in self-defense. He admits that some of the NATO countries are forsaking the United States, and he hopes we will not forsake them, which would be the natural reaction.

I don't like these clips with commentators, but this is the only place I could find this interview with Tapper:

He claims that it is only a small minority of NATO nations that are not being helpful.

I guess so, considering that the USA is something like 60% of NATO. We are NATO. If we leave, this bum is out of a job.

Bottom line: Trump calls on NATO once in a blue moon after sinking billions into the organization for the most basic service in return just allowing us to access our own bases so we can help save their oil supply and they told us to go pound sand.

Yeah, you got a problem, dude. You were surprised? Caught off guard? Sounds like you are utterly useless and asleep at the wheel. Chuck NATO.

I never expected for NATO to give us any real help in a major war. If the U.S. had somehow gotten in a war with the Soviet Union, or with Russia, I fully expected nearly all of the European nations to go the Vichy route almost immediately.

I expected that they would give us token help in small skirmishes, as they did in Iraq. I was fine with it, since NATO seemed to be keeping the peace, Europe was improving without the humilitation of being occupied by the U.S. and we had bases to ensure our influence on Europe was at least as great as the Soviets.

Now they have become totally useless. They are saying "look at my fingers. See me lifing one?" This idea of a country like Italy "denying us permission" to land a bomber at our own base is absurd. They are not the Taliban, and Trump is not Biden to give them all of our military bases and equipment.

If I were Trump, or Rubio or Hegseth, I would have answered, "What? I'm not sure what you mean by that? You have bases on Sicily? When did you build them? Tell us where 'your' bases are and we will avoid them - barring any unavoidable accidental bomb release, of course."

All the while, flying as many sorties out of the U.S. base as we needed.

Apparently the closest thing to a real war NATO has ever fought was nearly 50 years after the formation of NATO when they got involved in some small conflict in Bosnia back in 1995.

NATO was chiefly created to help bolster Europe against Soviet incursion. We fund it, and Europe feels safer. The idea that countries like Spain and Italy would refuse us access to our own bases out of fear of drawing reprisals from Persians tells me we need to cut the cord with these boobs.
