Does consumerism make us too bedazzled by fortune?

This vignette was inspired by Soapdish and references two Hollywood (USA) thespians Michael Biehn and Ali MacGraw (stars of The Terminator and The Getaway).

"Michael Biehn (star of The Abyss and The Terminator) was doing an interview about the new age popularity of sci-fi oriented film-making in America. He was asked about the earlier 'naturalism and sentiment' oriented films of America's yesteryear (e.g., Gone with the Wind, The Getaway, etc.) and responded that he was intrigued by the films of luminous actress Ali MacGraw (The Getaway) and how they symbolized pedestrian intelligence. Was this American idol-worship?"

"Biehn casually watched American college sports (NCAA) on TV and began to wonder if Ali MacGraw was a fan of Philadelphia-area sports (e.g., NFL Eagles, NHL Flyers, NBA 76ers, NCAAB Villanova Wildcats, NCAAF Penn State Nittany Lions, etc.). You see, Biehn believed modern media coverage of sports (especially collegiate athletics!) represented a social investment in consumerism intellectualism (since sports were a form of 'contractual bazaar etiquette'). However, was this all idol-worship?"

GOD: I worry that television will make Americans lazy...
SATAN: I worry more about Wall Street and Microsoft!
GOD: Perhaps big-business caters to too many 'creature comforts.'
SATAN: Is Netflix a form of idol-worship?
GOD: Netflix (like Amazon.com) represents consumerism conveniences!
SATAN: Have Americans become 'obsessed' with conveniences (e.g., eTrade)?
GOD: There's nothing wrong with expedited mercantilism...
SATAN: Where do we see the fear of junk-food then?
GOD: It's in the sea of consumerism (e.g., McDonald's Monopoly).
SATAN: We have to warn Americans not to become hypnotized by dollars!
GOD: There must be a way to coordinate eBay with RadioShack...
SATAN: You're talking about coordinating convenience with aesthetics?
GOD: Precisely; aesthetics separates gluttony from ornamentation!
SATAN: In that case, let's praise the flowery of Amazon.com.
GOD: Amazon.com is certainly a consumerism-trophy.
