Well, another way of looking at it is this: federal pay lags far behind the private sector. Government workers, in 2022 earn 27.54 less in wages than private sector counterparts.

And the feds are getting 10% more come January (1.046 x 1.052).

The salary studies which claim federal workers are paid less don't include total compensation package and do some weird calculations to adjust the numbers, like this one.

The salaries I see at the USAJobs website look competitive to me. Janitors, clerical workers, engineers.

The people at the fed I work with make about what we do (a little more), but they do have to live near the DC Beltway unless they telecommute .

I can't believe all those federal workers would stick around for that lousy pay out of the goodness of their hearts.

That said, it's highly variable. Lots of high-level feds go on to make a lot more money in private industry.
