I favor the death penalty for some cases. I just have issues with its application. The Death penalty, as applied by the US has always been unevenly applied, with the poor and the minority offender much more likely to receive a death sentenced.
I think that these commutations are just a big 'fuck you' to the Right..and have nothing to do with justice at all.

President Biden on Monday commuted the sentences of 37 individuals on federal death row, and their sentences will be reclassified from execution to life without the possibility of parole.

The president, in announcing the commutations, said he is “more convinced than ever that we must stop the use of the death penalty at the federal level.”

Some of those pardoned include Billie Jerome Allen, who was sentenced to death in 1998, Carlos David Caro, who has been on death row for over 15 years, and Len Davis, who has been on death row for over 25 years, among dozens of others.

“These commutations are consistent with the moratorium my Administration has imposed on federal executions, in cases other than terrorism and hate-motivated mass murder,” Biden said in a statement.

“Make no mistake: I condemn these murderers, grieve for the victims of their despicable acts, and ache for all the families who have suffered unimaginable and irreparable loss,” he said.

I've evolved on this issue due to learning first hand the evil that men in positions of power do. Also, we should not play G-d. The West definitely needs a system of consequences for cops, lawyers, judges and the like who bear false witness. If a person is wrongly imprisoned,.there must be consequences to those performing the wrongful act

It highlights the craziness of having the Presidential Pardon. I have no idea who these people are. But were they any less guilty on 12/23/2023 or 12/23/2022???? Nope. Why didn't he pardon them then? Clearly the answer was that it is a political calculation. Keep in mind he didn't overturn their convictions or set them free (the way Trump is going to) but they lived under the threat of lethal injection for years for no reason.

Every country to its own separate path of downfall .

But seeing a notional President interfering in the legal system's past rulings surprises me .

You can term his interference as "Presidential Pardon" as though that invests it with a higher meaning . But it doesn't .

It just means an individual's whim , who also happened to be the most phoney and worst President in this country's history .

All very strange . imho .

Well the 2nd thing during his term that I mostly agree with him on.

I kinda doubt he did this at 5am this morning though.

He didn't need to commute their sentences before now. He had a moratorium on the DP, and that was enough.

Let's review what happened here. The Death Penalty was restored nationally in the 1970s, but the Federal Government executed no prisoners under Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush the Smarter, or Clinton. Bush the Dumber executed 3 people (Including Timothy McVeigh) but that was pretty much it. Obama put a moratorium on Federal Executions. Then Trump came along and started popping them off like party favors with very little review at the end of the first time he disgraced the White House.

Good on him.

The sooner we join the rest of the civilized world in ending the Death Penalty, the better. We are in a club that includes Iran, Saudi Arabia and Red China.

Again, guy, Biden was miles above the Trump Shit Show.

the Pardon has been a power the President has always had, and it is meant to be a check and balance on the judiciary.

Biden just ruined Trumps Christmas

I'd be 100% for the death penalty, EXCEPT INNOCENT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN EXECUTED BY OUR GOV'T.

There is absolutely NOTHING ok about this. Even if just one, you have now murdered an innocent person. You are no better than the person you put on death row.

Interesting the three he didn't spare.

The three men who can still face federal execution are Robert D. Bowers, 52, who in 2018 gunned down 11 worshipers at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh; Dylann Roof, 30, the white supremacist who in 2015 opened fire on Black parishioners at a church in Charleston, S.C., killing nine people; and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 31, one of the two brothers who carried out the bombing of the Boston Marathon in 2013 that killed three and maimed more than a dozen others.

This is one of the few times I agree with you.

That said, people can be innocent and locked up for life, if they are poor or convicted in racist states.

We've managed to make the process of executing people so convoluted that we rarely do it anymore. Only about 24 last year, 25 this year.

We hit a low point of only 11 executions in 2021, 3 of them being Trump popping people off like party favors.

Do you know what became of the 2nd brother in the Boston bombing?

I think the practice is Barbaric

Most of our states and most of the free world no longer execute. In the US, it is primarily the Bible Belt doing the executing

The innocence project is freeing a lot of people, regardless of their ability to pay, as their services are free. And yes, innocent people are in prison right now, but at least they are not facing DEATH. And someone alive in jail can be released later. Once you kill them, that is absolute.

It really saddens me to know how many of my republican brethren support the DP even though they acknowledge and admit innocent people have been executed. I cannot, in good faith, support such a horrible act.
