Okay, but here's the problem.
For every Dylan Roof, I can give you a Rolando Cruz.
Cruz was accused of a horrible crime. He did something stupid, he tried to claim a reward for information on a child murder he knew nothing about, and ended up convincing the police he was good for it.
Even though authorities soon knew they had the wrong guy (the guy who actually did it admitted and was willing to make a full confession if the DP was taken off the table), they still went ahead with a trial and got the DP for Cruz. that conviction was thrown out. They tried him again, convicted him again, sentenced him to death again, and once again, it was thrown out by the courts because another guy did it.
In the middle of the third trial, the IL Supreme Court finally intervened and said "enough already", after one of the cops admitted he faked a confession.
Seven Cops and prosecutors that kept trying him, including fabricating evidence, were put on trial for violating his civil rights. They were acquitted by a DuPage country jury, and the jurors went out and had drinks with them afterwards.
