1. How did this dude end up in the hands of the Taliban. From the rolling stone article and other stuff I read it seems like he was a dumb ass who fancied him self a survival expert, tried to live off the land, and got cought.

I rarely see reports or new articles that go out of their way to make a difference between com and non-com, they simply write that this or that person so-or-so was an officer.
