Today’s top baseball players earn +$30M a year. The threshold of having baseball as the National Pastime was hit about 30 years ago with the average person being priced out of attending games. I had season tickets to the Angels in the 1980’s and noticed the trend. Businesses were quickly becoming the only season ticket holders as they could write them off as an expense. There needs to be a major reset in all of sports.

Some perspective:
In todays dollars Hank Aaron made $1,195,000 a year in 1976.

Willie Mays made $1,215,000 in 1965.

Sandy Koufax $1,130,000 in 1966.

Nolan Ryan $3,441,000 in 1980

Mickey Mantle $635,000 in 1958

Amazing

Now post how much the owners made back then compared to what they make today.

While you used to be able to buy a major sports franchise for under $50 million, now they sell for billions

More whining pampered athletes

Why do people spend so much time and money on these assholes?

If you love baseball get some friends together and go play baseball instead of sitting on your fat asses with a 6 pack and a bag of chips

It is not the players making $30 million a year that are complaining

It was players signing Rookie contracts for $500,000 and being tied up for seven years before they can become free agents
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I don’t give a shit. The average family of four can’t afford to even attend a game today where as it was a common location to attend.

Wow, how can anyone survive on just $500,000 a year?

I guess coming from someone who brags about making more than minimum wage that is a lot
But then you don’t have people paying $60 a ticket to watch you work do you?

Pro level Baseball Players are a limited commodity
They have a limited playing career and an injury can end their career overnight.

Half of their career (if they have a full career) they are limited to what they can make. First four years they are tied to a Rookie Contract (minimum pay scale) and then they are eligible for arbitration
They can’t qualify for Free Agency until the end of their career. Often when they are declining in production because of age and injuries

Limited commodity? No, they’re just better at it than others.
So pay players $700M then. Either way the sports killed itself.

Actually, they did raise it to $700,000 minimum

They also started a pool to give bonuses to starting players who have outstanding performance

Think Aaron Judge and Pete Alonso hitting 50 homers their Rookie years and getting paid $600,000
