I don't have a problem with the initial report from the Arizona Republic. They're blindingly biased in the stories they write and the way they write them, and I wouldn't put it past them to report only partial quotes, but I haven't really known them to outright make quotes up.

You're wrong. I suggest you take a trip to San Diego and visit the Fort Rosecrans National Military Cemetery in San Diego. I have, and read the names and date of birth of row upon row of Marines who died the SAME day on a beach in the Pacific during the push towards Japan in June 1945.
Working in a factory does not compare to spending days in the bowels of a ship, sea sick and knowing what was waiting for them in the days ahead. Most of these men were in their very early twenties, some as young as 19.
