Had it been allowed to remain in Federal Yankee hands it would have been completely furnished with the Federal navy backing it up, and it would have been very difficult to remove.

Plus, Anderson was under orders not to fire first. Because Lincoln wanted to make sure the South fired first and were the 'evil people'. Thus the destruction of Fort Sumter in 1861, doesn't represent what the Fort would eventually be if left to the Yankees.
